Speedometer died today

Hey all,

My 92 300D 2.5 Turbo's speedo and odo died this afternoon. Tach, oil, temp, clock, etc all work fine. I did a lot of searching on the board and I suspect it's the cable or at the transmission. The cable isn't noisy now nor were they any noises before it all stopped working--so I'm guessing it's not a problem in the cluster.

I don't have a lift, so I can't really stick a q-tip in the connection on the tranny to test the gears there. If I just hand spin the cable from the tranny end that should tell me if the cable and cluster is working, right? If it does, it sounds like it's the tranny gears.....

Thanks for some reinforcement before I dive in....

PS: Checked fuses and replaced just for the heck of it as well...

Well, I went under and I believe this is a picture of the connection of the cable to the tranny. It appears as the interior of the cable is exposed........ I have not removed it yet from the tranny....

Thanks for any more info...

Ok, so I took the cable off the tranny and connected it to my drill. No movement on the dash. So I pulled the instrument cluster and watched the cable while drilling the other end, no movement. So, I gather my speedo cable has snapped. Unless anyone says otherwise, I'm off to get one tomorrow!
