Help:190e 2.5 16

Hi guys

Need some help with my Euro 2.5 16 - Problems are as follows;

1. Rough idle - I have replaced Idle control servo/unit, cleaned the Idle control valve, replaced spark plugs, 4 x injection nozzles , vacuum pipes, fuel filter, no inlet manifold leak, replaced engine mountings, air filter assembly replaced, Air intake temperature sensor, Optimax fuel with octane booster.

2. Gearbox rattle which goes once clutch is depressed. Dog leg first and reverse gear very difficult to engage.

3. Rear axle whine which goes once speed exceeds 80 mph

4. SLS has been replaced with Europarts Shock absorbers/rubber blocks and OEM springs - the rear of the car is very bouncy so need some advice on whether this combination is flawed.

5. Oil pressue gauge is very bouncy once the engine is hot - appears to be sticking.

I am thinking of replacing the spark plugs with Denso Iridium plugs, what part number would be best for my car and is this likely to remedy the problem. If this does not work I am looking to replace the throttle switch but mercedes are quoting £350 as the switch comes with the complete throttle body.

I hope you can help as this car is a fantastic car to drive but the drive train seems to be struggling to cope with 205bhp(non cat)

hmm since you've had no replies...

1. Quite a few people clean their Idle control valve and the problem isn't solved. They even test it and it seems to work perfectly and still the problem isn't solved. Yet a new ICV solvs the problem. Basically they can be a bit dodgy. Some got results by cleaning repeatedly for 2 hours with rubbing alcohol and carb cleaner.
If your idle is permanently rough there may be a bigger problem than sensors etc. If sensors have failed the system will fall back into 'fixed operating mode'. This is a mode that allows the engine to run 95% properly when warm. However cold starting will suck.

2. Possibly your gearbox is dead. Does it crunch slightly if you make a rapid change into any of the gears when at speed?

3. Could be the gearbox too.

4. It has OEM 16v springs? - The SLS system takes a lot of the weight of the car. The OEM springs are quite weak. Replacing the SLS dampers and leaving standard springs is dumb. Whoever did this is stupid. Sorry if it was you.

5. Don't know about this.

6. I don't think fancy spark plugs will make a difference if you have already changed them. It should run fine on normal plugs. Buying more plugs won't fix it.

7. 205bhp is nothing for these cars. If it feels like it is struggling to cope there is something wrong with the drivetrain and/or suspension. It should feel very solid and stable on the road (and was renowned for this when new).

good luck

Russell
