Hello,

I am having my catalytic converter removed and putting in a straight pipe. Do I need to have anything else done once the process is complete? I read something about adjusting fuel mix??

Pardon my ignorance, but I thought the muffler held the sound level down?? The car will be louder because the cat is gone?

It will be louder by a decible or 2............but its not going to bust your eardrums or anything.

IMHO, you should not do this. First, it's a violation of federal law to tamper with an emissions device.
Second, we all breathe the same air and drink the same water. Don't screw it up. [/soapbox]

3 DB is twice as loud....its a logrithmic scale.....

there are plenty of high flow cats that will work better than original and flow almost as well as no cat at all....these days you can have flow and clean exhaust both...unlike durning the 70's

I've ran my honda with and without a cat.....the difference is almost twice as loud without....and definately raspier without.....no good reason to not run a cat these days....Universal fits with ecxellent flow can be had for about $100 each.

do a google.....3 db is twice the percieved volume...which on a stereo rquired 10X increace in power to achieve.

My poor car is already loud as it is...YIKES! However, to cut or not to cut is probably a moot point now as I dropped it off at the repair shop last night and they've most likely done it already. I'll try not to feel too guilty now that you've heaped on me. There is no emission testing in my county so I thought "why not?" - the cat was bad anyway.

spend $200 and put a pair on if you have duals..or $100 id its a single exhaust....it will help keep the air clean at no cost other than the price of the converter...

I'm surprised you found a shop that would do this, as the fine for a shop is 10X the fine an individual would face. And, testing area or not, it's still illegal.

I guess you have to live in the "country" to find such a place...... The shop doing it is not my regular MB mech's shop.

So back to the original question - is there anything else carwise that will be affected by the change?

definately on an ODB2 car.....A '77 isn't however....

get a high flow universal cat and do your part to keeping polution at a minimum...

ncgirl, I'm not a mechanic but have spoken to mine about the same issues.

I was told that since the whole SL timing/tuning system includes that CO2
setting, that a cat removal could require re-setting everything.
You may get a whole different airflow through the engine and that could
impact the fuel mixture.

I stress 'could' because every car is different. There's a section on the CO2 setting in the Haynes SL book - $15.00 max.
