450 SL Frame Question
I have a 1978 - 450 SL and I am trying to find out if the trans. tunnel is a structural part of the frame. I need to cut part of the tunnel for a trans. mod. Also, I have rust around the front floor area where the front frame ties in. How do I stiffen this area. Thanks drm184

Since the 450 SL is a unibody construction with sub frames front and rear. The whole body, especially inbetween the subframes is a structural structural member. That doesent mean that you cant do it. You have to acess the criticality of the area you intend to cut. This may require some engineering skill.
As far as repair of rust around your frame attach point, these need to be accesed on a case by case baises. Perhaps you could send in some pictures and others who have had similare problems may be able to help. John Roncallo |
