The basic timing is set up with the #1 lobes facing up and the crank at TDC.
Next, there is a hole in each of the cam flanges. The hole is on the rear of the flange that the gear bolts to. The hole is to line up with the valve cover mating surface when the chain is installed at TDC.

1st of all thanks for your reply!!
today i got ahold of a chilton import car repair manual and it says that the crankshaft should be at 30 degrees before TDC for cyl #1, and that the lobes of the cams must be facing on the middle of the buckets for cyl #2. now, i'm not so sure if the generic chilton book is really accurate, and i much rather trust your knowledge on this. would the chilton assertion be compatible with your recommendation?? is there any other resource (be it a manual, web site, cd-rom) that shows the procedure in detail? i would like to know soon before bending any valves!! thanks again for your help benzmac! jaime |

Benzmac is correct & Chilton is incorrect! Follow his directions, TIMING is done at TDC!!!

The 30 degrees is so that you don't bend valves while rotating the cams. Get them into position then turn the crank slowly to TDC. You will be OK if you follow my directions. I have done over a thousand of these.
