1983 240D
It has been starting OK, but for the first few minutes it runs really rough and sometimes stalls. I thought it might be the glow plugs, so I just changed the glow plugs. They all had a heavy coat of carbon on the tips. I also changed the clear fuel pre-filter. It seemd to have a few particles in it. I installed new injectors about 6 months ago. Any suggestions about the running rough? Is the carbon on the glow plugs significant? This has been a great source of information and I really appreciate the help. Thanks. |

Check a few things
Greetings Tref,
If you will check a few things you can probably find the answer to your rough idle. First off, when was the last time the valves were adjusted? My engine kind of ran rough to until I gave it a valve adjustment, seemed to make it happy after that. Before adjusting the valves there are a few things you can visually look at to see if perhaps you aren't sucking air into the fuel system as the engine is either trying to start or is running. The next time you go to start the car, lift the hood and prime the injector pump and lines with the manual pump. Do you see any air being pushed through the clear fuel return line when you do this? Trying starting the car right after priming and see if that makes the difference in how it runs at start-up. If it runs fine, then you are sucking air into the fuel system after it shuts down, and it's sputtering in the morning while it tries to rid itself of the non burning air gaps. We can go further into this as far as other troubleshooting ideas, but try this first. It could simply be a slight crack in the brittle like clear fuel lines, a leaking primer pump seal, loose injector lines etc. Look for leaking at any fuel line, including the bleed lines from injector to injector. hey tref,
I know it been a while since you posted this one but i have a 84 300d with a rough idle problem with a boat load of blueish smoke for about 90 seconds or so. I put in new plugs this summer so I was worried about my car doing even worse in the winter. I did a search of the forum and found out that the relay sends voltage to the plugs after the glow light go out of the car for up to 30 second. Now what I do is do a ten count when I plug it and it starts right up without that enormous volume of smoke and stalling. I am very happy about this as I was concerned about the cold chicago winters. I may even hook up a indicator light to the cabin to tell me when the glow plugs are getting power. This may be your problem bob |

You have a glowplug light
Greetings Bob,
You already have a glowplug indicator light on the dash that comes on when the key is in the number two position. In most cases it's preset to supply voltage to the glowplugs for 45 seconds. In a lot of cases it goes out when the engine cylinder is heated enough for the engine to start. In colder climates I generally wait until my seatbelt buzzer goes off which is approx. ten seconds after the glow plug light goes off. Sounds silly I know, but it actually allows the cylinder to warm up that much more and improves starting in cold weather. Charles
