I bought my first Mercedes, a 1986 190E 2.3, three weeks ago. Driving it home, I heard a clicking noise that sounded like it was coming from behind the passenger's side of the dashboard. I thought it was probably just a creak since the car is old. A day later, however, the stereo started to fade in and out and then it started to alternately cut off and come back on.

The owner of the dealership where I bought the car told me that Mercedes stereos are notoriously faulty and that I needed to replace it with a new stereo. I had a new stereo installed and I kept the original stereo. Now the new stereo is giving me the same trouble. It cuts on and off and I still hear the clicking noise in the dash.

I don't think the problem is in the stereo, but rather in the car's wiring. Does anyone have an idea what the problem could be? I'm not a mechanic and I don't know much about the inner workings of cars, so any advice will be appreciated. Thanks.

When the speakers are old, they may cut in and out as you stated. It is possibly caused by a broken cone.

Thanks, guys. I'll take the car back to the stereo installer and see if he can pull the stereo out and look for loose wires leading to the stereo.

BTW, is the stereo supposed to keep playing after the car is turned off and the ignition key removed? I've never heard of that happening with other cars.

Thanks for letting me know that, JS. I was concerned that something was wrong and the battery would be drained. I guess I've got a lot to learn about Mercedes.
