Help!

I have a 94 E420 that has a single wiper. The wiper works well but it makes this ticking noise. The wiper would swing all the way to the passenger side, and just as soon as it changes direction (comes back to the driver side), it makes this ticking noise (when the wiper is pointing at 2am or so). I can not figure out what it could be but it's very, very annoying! It's not the rubber squeaking against the windsheild. It sounds like the arm is rubbing against something - it's a ticking noise that's pretty loud.

Anyone?

I havnt had that happen lately (and hope i dont cause I got a new motor, arm, rubber insert, plastic covering, the whole 9 yards, lol)

anyway, turn on the wipers get out of the car and listen. Also pop the hood and listen by the motor and see if its coming from the motor. You can bend the arm back to examine the springs condition. Another possibility is the plastic peice that hides the nut for the wiper arm. If that plastic peice is put on improperly or loose, it can verywell cause that. Take it off, and snap it back on.

If it does sound like its coming from the motor, get to it and listen/examine. If you do suspect the motor, change it!

I dont know about your luck, but with mine, i will be driving down the highway with heavy rain and the single arm wiper would go out on me, lol. Keep us posted.

Possible simple fix. It might be that the wiper blade frame is worn out. I'm talking about the thing that the rubber wiper insert goes into. It has a series of pivot pins which help the wiper contact the glass through the entire length of the insert. These over time wear out with the repeated back and forth motion of the wiper motor. To test the blade, take it off of the arm, hold it by the center mount and shake it. If it rattles, the pivot pins are worn out. Go get a whole new blade(not the arm) and this should take care of the noise.

Will it hurt to forcefully move the wiper?

Thanks for suggestions. It's a good thing that it doesn't rain much during summer here in sunny California. Otherwise the noise from the wiper would've driven me crazy.

I tried to move/swing the wiper to see where the noise is coming from . I noticed that the wiper arm is very strong and it has enough registance that I was afraid that I would break it if I forcefully moved it. How does the single wiper work? Can I manually move the wiper side to side without hurting it?

Thanks

When I was having some squeeking noise with my wiper and decided to clean it, I learned how to manually move the wiper blade (I think this is what I did, I can't recall!)

Turn the key, turn on wiper and then immediately take the key out of the ignition so that the wiper has moved and is not in the parked position. Now if I recall correctly, you can now move the wiper 1 full cycle... you will be able to move it from the point that it stopped, all the way to the passenger side, and then back into the resting position on the driver's side. I am pretty sure this is the correct procedure. Give it a try and let me know.
