The lining of my trunk is not fitting snugly like it should. The problem is mostly on the sides, near the top. Is this lining held in by anything, or should was it originally glued? Are there clips or anything I may be missing? (the is an '86 420SEL).

I have the same problem with my 89 560SEL. Near where the boot lid (trunk) brackets fold down into the boot the lining has come away slightly and now catches when I close the boot. I can't see how the lining is supposed to be held in place, but was thinking about using some black self tappers near the top and screwing it in place if I don't find a solution.

There are a couple of clips on each side with a tab that holds the liner in place. I suggest looking at a similar car with the liner still in place.

I can see a clip that is on a metal tab in the boot but could not figure out how the lining is attached to it.

So the tab is still in place. The liner goes between the tab and the top of the fender (wing?). I don't know if the liner will contort enough to slide into place. I suggest you carefully pull on the tab to release the clip, then reinstall it when the liner is in place.
