Greetings
The sunroof and rear defroster does not work on my 92 400E. There are no sounds when trying to open the roof. I checked the fuse for these items and the fuse was fried. I bought a few new fuses and each time I started my car the new fuse would burst. I took this to a mercedes dealership and the service folks got the same results with more fuses. They believe I may have a wiring problem. Does this sound familiar to any of you? And have anyone out there experience this type of problem, is it a costly one? MattD |

Does the fuse blow as soon as you start your car or as soon as you turn the key onto ignition (without actual starting)?
It sounds like the power wire to the sunroof motor is shorted along the way to the back... What is the story with the rear defroster? Does the fuse blow as well or is it a switch/relay/rear screen problem? greetingz,

Actually the fuse starts to fry as soon as I turn the ignition on prior to the car actually starting. My rear defroster and rear head rests use the same fuse as the sunroof.

Been there, done that and even bought a T-shirt...
Let me give you a little back ground...I had the same problem except it was with my windows. The fuse would blow, but you could still operate both back windows from the actual doors, just not the center console. I traced the problem back to a part called the "power convenience moduled" This item is a black box located under the rear seat drivers sdie and is big $$$$$ to replace. I ended up getting a used one for $125.00 from a place called PGAUTO.COM
This may be a wild shot or it may hit the nail on the head. See if your local dealership has one and will let you plug it in and see if it works. My car is a 124 series and the new part has a part number that begins with a 202 as opposed to a 124. What is ironic is that the following week after replacing my control box, my friend had the same problem with his sunroof, as you are describing..BINGO it was the box that went bad. Good Luck!!!! Let us know how it turns out. |

See if the dealer will let you check the problem out by using the new part. We figured mine about by using the wiring diagrams and testing various components along the way.

400E 92 Sliding Sunroof Mystery solved
First of all thanks to all of you who replied about my sun roof not working. Well today it's working just fine. I took it to a mechanic for an oil change and when I mentioned my sun roof wouldn't open even after changing fuses he told me to check my cigarrette lighter to see if any coins or objects may have fell inside the lighter chamber. Well I checked and found a penny there. When I removed the pennny and put a new fuse in PRESTO the sun roof works!
It appears that the copper penny was the cause for the frying of the 25 amp fuses I kept trying to install.. Amazing, eh, good thing there are honest mechanics around. As you can tell I am a non-smoker had I kept the lighter where it belongs, oh well..' The good thing is the problem was solved for free |
