Replacing Shocks on '85 300CD - DIY project?

I want to replace my shock absorbers.....car rides fine but they are old and I'm always looking for things to renew....

I have no manuals but am competent with tools. Can I do this job? I searched the archives but found no step by step explanation. Did read something about compressing the springs which sounds like a special tool type deal.

Anyone able to take me through this? Should I even try?
