What I can't work out after even looking at the pictures, is how the seat can move back and forth without the extinguisher getting crushed if you go forwards. Yet you did it. Hypnotism?

I would really want to get one of these and mount it like on the euros. In fact, some guy on Mercedesshop has a friend in Germany and who will be going to junkyards there with Mercedes there, and look for fire extinguishers & brackets for them, trunk triangles, and other things that Americans want for their Mercedes. Generous guy. I can think of a couple of things I would buy, for sure.

I hope its not cause for violation...

I'd have to chack it closer
All I know is apparently it is not moving with the seat frame or it would alwasy be exposed the same amount

Could be bracketed on a part of the seat fram that doesn't move...
Not sure have to look.

As for clearance
I have the seat up to max & still I would like it higher
so maybe thats why it clears
Still it does seem to be same distance under seat
so it must be tied to seat in vertical
but it doesn;t explain why it doesn;t move foward & back with the seat

Oooh can't figure it out

well better gets some things done

Have a great day

Been following your new car story. You seem to be having fun and a Euro car is a great find in most any condition.
THought you might like to see this one I found on the forum in all its glory.

http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/vbpicgallery.php?do=view&g=458

He sounds like his is not in as good a condition inside, but the outside is a nice example of how unique these cars can look and the Euro bumpers are so much better in my humble opinion.

Have fun and dont stress out about the car's temp. You'll get it sorted out and love the car.

Thanks for the encouragement & pics

Certainly looks like a mean machine in black
but I'm happy with the Maganese & I have no rust or rattles or squeaks

Car cover is in dryer

I have a commercial washer
not huge but cover is a dust cover & not even as heavy as a comforter

Washe it in woolens
its did mostly soak lil agitation than spins so the cover came out ok

It has a tear or two
but could have had that before
It's good for dust I guess
Made in china out of US matierials
Called Block It...

It does widen at the mirror area & it's good to protect the car.

Just have some minor details & try to get it to run cooler

Thanks again

83 w US bumpers

http://newyork.craigslist.org/lgi/car/408972377.html

Silver is nice
but those bumpers distroy the lines

So they really did make them
change:

bumpers
lights
& remove fire extinguisher?

This car came out just about when I got out of college
Couldn't afford it then
Can barely afford it now
but I love the chance to try...

Sent out a letter to owner w a ssae
Basically introducing myself & that I purchased their car
Noted the car looked like it was loved
thanking them for taking care of the car so well
& that I hoped to do the same.

Kindly asked them if they would be so kind as to share with me any details
such as shop that it was serviced at since I had no maintenance records
& if they recall Timing chain or radiator had been changed...

I mentioned its temperature problem & my hoping to reolve it.

THat was about it.

Its a letter written by a 50's italic Parker P51 fountain pen filled w purple ink

I chose it as the owner seems to be a artist interested in stamps.
I didn;t address it to the DR as the pink slip was in probably his wifes name.

I attached a lil stamp of a plumeria on the envelope just to personaize
it.

I left my phone number & email too

Well, perhaps I will have strucjk a congenial chord wo the green back
LOL

We;ll see...

Can't hurt to try....

Simple letter
Wishing them the best & thanking them in advance...

What I have been thinking is finding the head number for the 83 sec
That 84 500 Sec at $2000 Ebay didn't sell
Now I know the engine in that most likely would not compare to mine
Probably has different heads
Heads make a difference

I remember my TA had the 12 heads
D port
The Gto had different heads though same engine
Does that make sense
& the firebird
well it was a whole different duck
LOL

So what I am thinking is that I'd like to know what head my engine has

the valve covers in the 84 sort of look different

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=190144391786&ssPageName=STRK:MEWA:IT&ih=009

May not be all that important
but I get interested in the nitty gritty...

Sounds like the pitch perfect approach

I would have been soooo charmed - as would most people, to get something like that - probably men would have really liked it..we are suckers for that stuff......as you girls very well know. good move

Perfume on the envelope would have sunk us

What if I said I have the records on an old Volvo? LOL hahaha

but without the twenty?... shame on you! - holding back on them

I would have thoght it would have really sealed the deal, even rich people like $$$

But I don't know, maybe it would have been all right, the money could have been seen as a bribe or an insult, in some cases, who could tell?

The ultimate jackpot would be to score a sheaf of actual receipts and records for it.

I like the sledgehammer approach; you know: money talks. In fact it swears

Thank you for the car cover information, maybe I shall hie myself to a laundromat, and clean that thing in a commercial washer. It was couple of hundered bucks I think, with antenna grommet, "ears" for fitting the mirror

Terrible marketing example on ebay

No wonder the car did not sell. It is a crap ad. Tells you nothing except he changed the oil on it.

Looks like it was done by 6 year old children, and a blindfold was involved.

The Vin# tells you it is an American spec car, one of the first 500 SECs that came here through a new car dealers

The pictures show little. They are good enough for Craigslist but not ebay.
He could have cleaned up the garbage out of it at least

Zero feedback a BIG danger signal. Bet is at least 10 positives for different cars sold, and a lot more other things if there is a first time family seller

He could be a banned crook coming back under a new name. He could be anyone - who knows. Better to have sold other stuff and had a good reputation

He even could have started at $1.00 and seen what happened at the end, with a hidden reserve that was reasonable.

An '84 US 500 is a yawner. Borrrrrring. These things are dogs on the market. Everyone really wants a Mercedes diesel wagon right now.

Plus, it is an Indiana car.

Big red flag - it could be rust from the door handles down.

We fanatics are ruthless

Deconstructing the Euro-cars

What I would have wanted to know not what was on the head of the engine of this car, but a copy of the VMI ( and I have taken the liberty to ask on Diesel disc. whether you get them for gray market cars, without mentioning yours)

and what makes you suppose that the heads were different? Only the US bound examples may have had more emissions junk on or in them.

Perhaps you know something here that I don't?

I would been after a factory build sheet from the elves in Stuttgart who built it.

What exhaust system did it have on it? Not just what engine.

Knowing the horsepower is the REAL thing I would want to know

Was it a KAT model? a RUF? or the ECE variant?

Horsepower is the bottom line, IMO You need to know which version you have

Since there was no 83 US version head isn't all that important
just like to know
but its possible in 84 that the US engines may have been built different that Euro...

You keep mentionin there is a difference
that the Euro is a high compression engine
So I just got curious

i would expect the exhaust system to be modified in the US
esp for acceptance of cat converter

While knowing the original Euro specs are nice
its still going to be a guess on what the eventual US car came to be
