Stuck without it, to next week hunh? Too bad, but maybe worth it. Dont rush the guy.
Stuck here as well. Flat tire again. Damn it. Damn it. I knew this was coming. Maybe I need a set of wheels. I am tired of this; posted the question in wheels and tires but no luck yet with a response. The ASA 8s look good. Brushed steel good enough http://www.tirerack.com/wheels/results.jsp?autoMake=Mercedes-Benz&autoModel=560SEC&autoYear=1991&autoModClar= That stupid rim is bent or won't seal. I am so tired of replacing the valve. That Benz has new tires and I am dead in the water. Again. Rolling nowhere. ![]() I bought a new battery charger if my Subaru won't start. The country is not like SF where you can walk/bus whereever you like. Everything depends on cars too much here. Guess I am strange about this.

I got ole faithful... ![]() Still my mind is on the benz & it really will be a joy to drive when I don;t have to constantly check the oil temp. ![]() I don't mind letting him take his time & do all the regular work that comes his way. Thats to both our benefit. I'm glad he has it in the bay thats all. I didn't want to think it was outside esp w the cloudy skies. It even sprinkled lightly earleir. The wires look like they were blue near the distrib boot but the rest is covered in black. Wires must be old but as long as they are functioning I may hold off on that as the car is running tight & smooth. ![]() Those rims look nice but goodness prices of car parts have really gone up inlast 20 years. The $400 wheel do look better but for that price ????? someone noticed I think my wheels have locks I don't have a key unless the car key fits it They are SND & I still don't know what they are but I saw another 83 500 SEC w the same wheels so I guess they are correct I have one of them air compressors you plug in the ciggy lighter. It is good to have a ciggy lighter It will inflate a tire & if its a slow leak it allows you to drive to a station Guess your spare is kaput too? Too bad its not the benz they could come & inflate it if they have that. I'd have a battery charger as I can't be wo it If the battery goes down in the garage I can jump it to start & hopefully charge. I have done it many time to avoid calling the AAA There are buses here even put in a train system You can ride them all for a $5 a day pass So if you come for $5 a day you can get around wo a rental. Well hang in there seems lke you have to take care of that wheel if its not the valve Oh there are Bridgestone tires on my Benz are they good? Don't know the rating will have to check I looked but didn't seem to find it well hang in there I think you have to make a list too

Hi. Hope you don't mind my commenting. I've been reading this thread for some time. I just missed a very nice 85 500SEC and I think you are very lucky to have the car you just bought. I also think that dark brown is one of the nicest colors for these cars. Look after it and cherish it.
- Peter.

I don't mind. I'm glad that you think I made a good choice as it was not an easy one for me. Sorry you missed the 85. I know how much you can get attached to a car even before its yours. Luckily as they say, this car seemed to be destined for me & I truly hope you find the car meant for you... I am really loving the color now. Wehn you see it in person in good light it has a rich glow & its pairred w a nice tan interior Ohhh can't wait to get it from the shop even if it just goes to the grocery til I find the time to take it out on the road. I want to get the feel of it first & know that it is road worthy.

Youtube Car music :music of the cars:
Maybe around one hour to look at all of these. ************************************ 1. Jonathan at Road Atlanta last year. He is on Benzworld.com Here is his monster 560SEL black sedan, roaring up the track at about 130 mph on the back stretch. My favorite vid. Listen to it roar as he opens it up. He scares the BMW and Porsches with this. Cost him about $500 to do some laps. Big engine, 560SEL sedan, 6.0 liter AMG 32 valve. HUGE POWER, HUGE FUN http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SbHEPbS9ZeU *********************************** 2. Here is the fastest 560SEC in the world, Belongs to Satish Tummala MD. Friend of mine. Has a V12 Mercedes engine stuffed into it. Began when he put a 6.0 engine like the one in the first vid. into it. He let me drive it once. Endless torque. I raced him one night by the SF airport and he cleaned my clock. Ran away from me at 90 mph. Then blew up that engine and put in a 500 SEC euro in it. Then that wasnt enough so he did this V12. Look at the beginning, you will see the license plate bracket you are looking for on the back of his car. Listen to it roar when he goes down the road. Very few SECs smoke tires like this. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QpytnbbMfyw This video was outside the shop near Detroit in Michigan, that he owns. , rather than being a Radiologist. He quit that job, of being a Medical Doctor so he could do this. What he really loves to do is race and soup up Mercedes cars. Had him for a dinner party at house when I lived in SF. He ONLY talks about Mercedes. Nothing else he cares about. The girls hated him. The guys loved it. It was funny. *************************** 3. Here is a 1986 or 1987 500SEC Euro burning out in Czecho in Europe. These cars are all over Europe and cheap. Nothing special for them anymore. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Re1VQ6tuJpc&NR=1 *********************************** 4. Englevakten's 560SEC Euro in Germany Never mind the rap. Look at the mesh grille on the front, the fake V12 badge on it and body kit. Burns out, rides with his little boy on the highway. He is on Benzworld.com W126 section a lot. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TctX6YGaGfI&mode=related&search= ************************************* 5. Jonathan (from first Video at Road Atlanta) here he is at his shop in Atlanta with his 91 SEC on the dyno testing the horsepower. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LRQmvyFNhU4&NR=1 ********************************************* 6. Here are teenagers drifting and messing around in a 500SEC Euro in Yugoslavia, cars like this are cheap in Yuguoslavia and Europe so this is what people can do to them and not evfen care. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=skMVZXWqamc&mode=related&search= ********************************************** 7. 15 second clip of a 560 SECeuro taking off. Look at the right gauge, it is the ultra rare Euro trip computer. Only sold in Germany. Lettering in of course, German. Takes up a whole dial, pretty complicated and useless waste of space. Computers were junk in 1990. A 1990 car. ****************************** 8 . Volvo 740 DEMANDS equal time!!!!!! How about THIS: 530 hp 740 Volvo turbo sedan looks just like my old black charcoal Volvito 4 cylinder 112 hp car and this crazy turbo is tearing up Sweden, drifting, drag racing and making trouble ALL over Sweden. Gotta love those nutty Swedes!!!!!! "laddtryck is the ****" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SbHEPbS9ZeU ********************************* 9. Best car chase of all time. 7 ups. New York City Look at those big old American boats. 73 Pontiac Grandville chased by Ray Scheider of "Jaws" in a 73 Pontiac Ventura. Big floater car rocks on its springs in the corners. The driver was Bill Hickman, who drove the Dodge Charger in the Bullitt movie car chase with Steve McQueen in his Mustang in SF. If you had a '70 Trans AM, then you remember cars like these; I do. Best ever. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5i6xfVek5Yg ****************************** 10. To finish, I bet you never saw this. Its a German movie shot in Italy. called "The Master Touch" A 1958 Plymouth coupe with a funny horn, being chased by some 60's German car, maybe a German Ford or Opel. Sometimes the Plymouth becomes a 1960 Dodge Dart sedan though! Really funny 6 minutes. Neat ending. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_bxvGy1Uy70 ******************************* I hope you liked this. I never joined you tube yet. Like many guys I like the chases and crashes. The best of them are all on you tube. You have to look for them pretty hard, sometimes. Jim **********************************

You found me out I do sometimes fall under the spell of a poet... Wow, some nice U Tubes Some I did see I like the all white headlights Mmmmmm My trans AM was a thing of beauty tmost of the other cars were jalopies & straight end hunks of metal My bother had a muscle car thing His fondest was the 67 Gto which I unfortunately had to tell him didn;t have the orig plant after I looked up the engine code My trans AM had the orig engine & for a NY car came up to CA standards in fact it was cleaner underneath than this 500SEC But it was too big for me They made those cars back then for 6 foot men N way to fit a petite 5 ft lady in them I had to have a few car cushions Anyway after 19 plus years & using it less than 2000 miles in 20 years I sold it. I loved her So hard to part The sadness in her engine as she was roaring away from me We both knew we would never meet again So we said our last goodbye as I watched her tail lights fade into the night as a tear fell from my eye... This car sort of replaces her & brings me into another category I'm no longer 25...LOL I can't get over the thick sway bars in the back they are massive like 2 inches wide big jpints My my 2 pipes are coming onto muffler so the exhaust is split Looks like the right pipe comes staight from the exh manifold and the left crosses over behind the engine they are routed down center into the cat converter than they neet uo w muffler So it would seem it dual exhaust even though they converge into one muffler This is a great touring car Will have to take it on a nice drive Go some where relaxing Let it burn off all those years of sitting clear out the engine & things. Well first a call to Enrique All those golden recommendations can't be wrong I don't know how his prices compare to my Volvo Mercedes guy in Encino. You know To replace timing belt tensioner front seal & water pump was $300 labor plus parts I don't think that was too bad! that was in 2003 though. They do good work Came recommended too? Who knows but when I asked him what he thought about me getting a 83 500 SEC he advised against it...Said it was too old & expensive to fix... I suppose he really was giving me good advice but I fell under the cars spell & it was pointless to resisit... ![]() Spoke with Enrique He seems very nice I should take it in tomorrow that is if I can charge the battery & it starts have to take care of that today. He bascially said it's easy to know if it needs a timing chain Said if it rattles at start then it does??? If it rattles that would be very bad imo I don't hear anything like a rattle Enriques shop is the next exit after my repair shop....LOL I know escatly where it is ![]() well, hopefull I will take it there tomorrow & come out smiling ![]() Still can't find a way to get plates on back can't run a wire thru holes as I can't gain access to back I did get to tie on the front with rubber coated wire I cut out a rubber protection gasket for the back of it so that it woulnd't mar the paint. For now mostly good news I got the battery on the charger its really down dated 6/05 date of last smog by owner & driven less than 200 miles ib last 2 years I hope I can get it charged enough in 5 hours or so Don't want to leave hood open & extension cord across garage when neighbors come home. If not I'll have to hook it up again tomorrow & feed 10 amps into it & start it Don;t want to Its a real procedure to get the extension cord in & the terminals are sort of in the back & not easy to reach OOH well More good news There is a black bag with german writing in the medical kit compartment I didn;t take it out yet but guess thats' it... Was under the car with cardboard, mirror & flashlight looks better than I saw last night It's clean No drips There were no drips by him either always a plus Looks to be that the collector of exhaust in middle was belly up when the rear wheels were on high and the front down the hill the center rubbed ITs an excessive incline of almost 35 degrees Muffler & pipes are secure they are high under the under carriage & seem to be sturdy It was suggested I appraoch at an angle trying to make it more gradual. Luckily the driveway is quite wide Update battery appears to be taken a charge gained 4 volts in 4 hours arrgh 6 to go but I don't have that time Let's hope she starts tomorrow so we can see Enrique Well thats my day so far... Tomorrow Enriques..thanks for the reco.. Just by speaking with him you can tell he's a gracious man ![]() Hope everyone is having a great day!

It looks like Enrique will take care of the car well, and for a VERY fair price, and is well regarded. I wish I could take my car there as he knows the place well. The SEC coupes are beguiling old cruisers, and they look so good. The fellow who designed them Bruno Sacco, still owns one in Germany for his everyday car, he likes them so much. He described them as a good 30 year car! Took 3 years to desin and develop, then about 10 in production, and each car to last 20 years or so. = about 30 years. I like the old Trans AMs Camaros and so on. One member here has 'an '89 AMG 560SEC euro but also, an original 1969 Yenko Nova untouched. The tuners like that, and Baldwin Motion and Nickey, put the 427 in them and what cars. Royal Bobcat would put a tigerin the tank of the GTO for you The very nicest ones for me were the '67 GTO, Chevelle SS396 and 442 Olds and Buick GS. Perfect. The 1969 Camaro and Trans Am were close. There seems to be some spiritual connection with those to the SEC coupes later, especially the GM coupes. I always wanted one, but only got close with a 67 Cougar I never should have sold for a Skylark ![]() No wonder you like them so much. That 70 is gorgeous - the true 1969 Pontiac Trans Am colors. Ram Air II or Ram Air III. something like that. Gasoline 35 cents a gallon and a Mobilgas steak knife or LA Lakers glass if you filled it up. Those were the days. It must have hurt bad to let the TA go. People love those. First year of the new style. Like a Ferrari but American style nasty. There is NOTHING like the sound or feel of them. I got a ride in a brand new 68 SS396 a friend had and when he floored it it did wheelstands when he shifted into 1st second and third! The car rose up and the dashboard shook. Used an 1/8 of a tank of gas in 5 minutes , too. But what fun. Best ride of my life, I think it was the big 375 horse. I almost bought a used '70 SS454 once. Bright red, a LA car. But it was so fast it really scared me. Wish no that I did. But they are gas eaters. The times when you could get a SS396 for $1500 if you didnt mind a few dents and a cracked windshield. Sigh My uncle had a brand new 1966 GTO in beautiful silver he had bought. A 3 speed, not the 4 speed, which his wife could not drive. Manual steering and brakes. Black inside, lots of wood and chrome trim. Little dog dish hubcaps. So beautiful. I found out much later sometimes in the 80's he traded it on a brand new Chevy Citation X11 piece of junk. He said when he pulled up in the Goat, all the car salesman ran out of the Chevy dealer and tried to buy it off him. I wish I knew, I could have maybe got it. Darn. Nothing like them. 427 Copo so sexy to see and hear one of them http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_uKyKYqfQGs I love this. Pictued in the the garage. No need for a stereo in one of these. The engine is the music. Swap the SEC for it.............hmmm got to think

Camaro & trans am had same bodies
69 was old style & now to me resembles the SEC esp in back window section 70 was the first year iof the F body Long low sleeker also a better handling car A standard 70 TA came with a 400 in RA 3 high compression engine putting out stock 340 ghp the dame engine in the gto put out 366 horse which is what the engine could do but they put a stop spacer on the carb in the TA to keep it in limits You know the epa Then again as I reflect the TA came with D port sort of square exhaust port openings. I think some GT)'s or the RA 4 came w the round port which flowed better probably adding to the extra HP My TA came w headers & after 20 years that car was loud so don;t bother to turn on the stereo It did hsve Blsupunkt & booster in glove compt but still it couldn;t compete with that engine Strong as can be only 88K mi She was a rare L plant car which means she was made in Van Nuys & I took her back from NY to LA by Horseless carriage Only the best for her she sat under a porsche No other way she was to low to go by rail or anything They did a great job Highly recommended & not much more for personanized white glove treatment. If you ship a car its the way otherwise you just never know what sstones will break the windshield what battery acid will fall on the car or even something worse I heard the nightmares & if I was going to spend close to $1000 to ship anyway I might as well kick in 2 or $300 more & do it right!!!! oooh gosh I think I finally forgot Think the heads were 10:1 while the 69 was 10.5 to 1 not hardened heads Drank leaded gas & actually mine got good miles for its size I still got about 8 mpg LOL OOOOh I need your help please I can't figure out how to get the gas door open it must be electirc I can find no swrtch & nothing in the manual Its also close to R I;m afraid the battery only nay have taken half a charge Had it on over 6 hours then I smelled something someones pipe a bbq or heaven please no a fire and I don't even know how to use the fire extinguisher Yikes myabe thats why eiros came with them The battery says international Wonder if its us specs maybe it not supposed to be charged with a reg charger???? Also the battery got warm Its ok I stood by it a half hour to make sure it wasn;t a slow smoulder I would likw to get gas but then I can't as I might not be able to start it if the battery is really low If I can;t start it tomorrow I can put on the charger in thr garasge but can't do that at the pump So I might have to get to Enrique on the bottom of the tank which I don't like to do... OOOH this is something I really hate!!!!! but wil l have to bear with it til its charged ![]() My fav benz was the lil soft top slc but now I think this I like better just seems more substantial the other car has such a small cab & probably not ass strong head frame structure you know in case the car ever flips ![]() yeah right Do you think being close to the R I can go the 20 or so miles to Enrique? Would I make it back Darn Chevron is on corner & I can't even gas up ![]() The seller was supposed to charge it he forgot maybe its good His charger was run over casing smashed and it was 6 amps mine has 2 10 & a 15 amp boost Wouldn;t want him to leave it one overnight & havce the engine catch on fire ![]() OOOH please Mr gas Door Open Sesame OOOH, did you see my sec was hiding the first aid kit in the door with the blue & white cross in the rear Thanks for the tip its hard to figure the car esp when things are in deuche may have to get an interpretor

Those TA doors really are pretty heavy. I dunno how accurate it was, but we weighed one of them and it was 200+ lbs.

One of the first things I did with my sec was to get a set of flush headlights from a later model. I couldn't stand the recessed ones. There was a place that advertised in Hemmings in Florida that had a lot of secs they were parting out. I also got a rear window from them, the rear glass likes to cloud up on the edges on an sec.
Your car looks very nice. Did I mention the rear end is probably a limited slip? Tom W

Good morning
TA doors are long & heavy bet you could be right on the wieght Sound is similar build says anti slip differ so guess thats what that massive system is on the right by the rear wheel Thanks Jim I do hope it all goes well Fluids I noticed the rear belt in the one with 2 belts in front has more slack I will ask Enrique to take a look at condition of belts to be sure tune check spark plugs you can tell alot from them I;'d say new sp wires too they are heavily coated w balc & they used to be blue so maybe otigianl? The glass on my car has some special laminiate windshield has this big round decal Stig whatever with a horse Window clarity & conditon is amazing literally that is almost like new Good Euro AC was better maybe the electronics were too My neighbor into cars took a look couldn;t get over the upolstery o al in all for the $ I got a exc solid body & running car some of tyhe rubber gaskets are a bit worse for wear but thats to be expected Well I'll try a start The manual warns about disconnecting the battery while the engine is running states this would hurt system I didn;t do that I do know charging in car will have some drain maybe thats what they mean both + - terminal have a small ground wire from post neg one was so close to post that I had to cloap over it it made contact though the charger was reading If it starts I may chance a 2nd restart if it turns over fast & hopefully I have 2 starts or will have to see if AAA will jump me. I had one tow & one jump this year I thought it was 2 tows per yr but not sure if a jump counts seems 4 calls so iI should ahve 2 left OOOh well... Kind of exciting & still a bit of trepidatious... I'd think aerodynamically the flush headlights w cover are more streamlined less drag but they also could serve to hold the nose down a bit Well better get all the things ready Hope to give you all the good news later Have a great day Last edited by CamelotShadow; 08-24-2007 at 01:44 PM. |

Using AAA card, suggestions about when and when not to
Quote:
For the AAA: what happens, depends on the member ship year on your card, they count from that: ie, for instance if it says 11-21-06- 11-21-07 that would be the "year" you have..... You get three calls per year on the CSAA card: For tows, out of gas, battery jump, anything: So----for save them all for the Volvo. For the Mercedes, You have lifetime free Roadside: I think I mentioned it to you before (but if not) just call 1-800-FORMERCEDES and they will send out to you (for free) a Mercedes ML or tow truck from the dealer. You get a free jumpstart, tire change, or couple of gallons of gas if you run out. (Once I told them to get me a new battery and they installed one in the rain, for only the cost of the battery - no labor charge, no trip to the dealer or Autozone - great!!!!) But if you have it towed, it will be to the Mercedes dealer - NOT to a shop like MrMB.. guess why. Best of all, you are Automatically covered. Just have proof you own the Mercedes. It covers ANY car ...as long as it as a Mercedes.....no matter how old.....I don't think it matters if it is a gray market Euro one....(though for an OLD gray market car, you are not going to be on the top ten on the Mercedes Benz "Dealer's Hit Parade" And it is a LIFETIME service .....you can call them 100 times a year...... After the first call to them, you are in the computer, so next time they will just verify what is there, before they call Out in the country, they contract the tow truck. You might even get the SAME ONE the AAA would use. Ask me how I know..... That's why I say....use 1-800FORMERCEDES instead of AAA For towing, have it FLATBEDDED every time. Otherwise, if it is on the "hook" from the rear the rear diff. fluid will get overheated and cooked, More in you owners manual about that. FOR AAA: After THREE calls to them for their Roadside, you will get a letter memorializing when and where you had them, and the date and place where they came, and for what car (but not what they were for) and advising you 1. You had your 3 bites at the apple (for free) 2. You PAY them for fourth one - will be billed to you - but they will still come 3. Four is the limit for a membership year. And for a tow, you pay whatever the tow truck asks for over a 5 mile tow - directly to the driver. Also - They MIGHT cancel your AAA member ship and probably will, if you get SEVEN bites of the apple off them in ONE membership year, or TWELVE, total, in TWO consecutive membership years. And the reason I know..........ahem.........is because I got a letter from them like that.........(hides face).......it is right here. I called on the Subaru Outback three times so far this year for service from AAA. Used MB roadside for the Mercedes And I have to make it all the way to Christmas..............it is so far away. I haven't used that car for a week. Need to get groceries, will it start? Save your Apple bites for the Volvo. Use MB roadside for the Mercedes calls. Unless for a tow - Mr MB and Enrique is better and cheaper than a Mercedes and I think is only place they Mercedes MB ROadside tows you - to the Mercedes dealer - which might not want to fix the car or deal with it well -----Probably half the Mercedes dealer techs were not even BORN when the car was new in '83. I exaggerate, but you DO get the point.... Hope this isn't too late.........For the Mercedes, bite the Mercedes Roadside apple.... it is free......you get as many free bites as you need. For the other car, use the AAA, and count the bites. For the older cars, I would think that the EXTENDED (AAA Plus) towing you can get for higher yearly dues is worth it. I only used it once (When the Mercedes muffler dropped off its hangars - but it was worth it, as it was FAR over 5 miles away from where I needed to go) Just a thought. Thanks for the tips about hotels around, maybe there is a car rental place around. It is not like SF where I am from, bus every few mintues and you can walk most places you need. I often walked home from the Volvo shop that I used. Never heard of the town you live in and thought I knew most of them. Best of luck. For plug wires, use BERU, they are best. Ask Enrique though what he thinks From your pictures, and description, it sounds like a VERY powerful, unique car in excellent shape, even with the miles, (which mean little on a battleaxe like a 500SEC) with choice gray market parts on it. It is amazing it came complete with all those books and some records through an AUCTION to some curbstoner. And has a good pedigree - ONE owner only, the curbstoner and the auction got skipped in the chain of title, so probably you get recorded on DMV records as the second owner - remarkable for an '83. Usually they have been through 4 or 5, at least by now MORE amazing, the car was right near you a few miles away, and the seller, tried to help. Though of course he lied about the ownership at first, which was mean. When I first saw your post about it here, I ALMOST thought it looked fishy and was going to tell you to run away, but then I read it again and studied my pink slip and it looked like MAYBE it could work if the papers were signed off legally. Those charities like that are registered dealers too and have to be careful. Otherwise their dealer license gets pulled. Looks like the car REALLY was meant for you. I'd definately go to a junkyard this weekend and get the two license plate brackets and screws for them there. As I mentioned above, with a screwdriver crescent wrench and rattle can of WD40 with luck you could maybe find a pair for under $20 if you pull them.

Holy cr*p!!! They go cheap when cars4causes puts them on ebay.
I wonder what the curbstoner paid for yours. Probably got it at an Auction or off their lot in Santa Paula, where it was probaby donated by the first owner (near his home in Ventura co.)
