It looks like a very nice car.

They are built really well. My 84 500sec was very inexpensive to keep running.

Always depress the gas pedal about 1/4 on start up. Don't get excited if it runs a little rough when it first starts up. I chased that with five or six hundred dollars in repairs that never did a bit of good and it never got better or worse. Use a good injection cleaner every couple of months.

Drive it a lot.

Enjoy.

If you are near here I want to come see it sometime.....with your permission.

That brown used to be my favorite color of benz.

Clean and treat your leather often to keep it supple.

as was said the plastic starts to go

but all in all it still looks great & is pretty reliable

Wil have to get a pic of her
she is quite stunning in her own swedish big girl way

Wow. Sounds "exactly" like my old Volvito. Even the color, She was Charcoal Gray with tan seats also. Stunning when waxed up and Polar white New Zealand sheepskin seat covers.

That could have been "me" four years ago with those two cars living in SF with them. Except the Volvito was a '91 and the SEC is a '91 as you see in the picture and is black.

But Volvito, SF, and my ex wife are now memories. Volvito's place is now assumed by a '95 Subaru Outback wagon for the Sierra Nevada snow, a car without the personality of Volvito.

The old 112 hp engines in them are utterly indestructible. Their heads especially. Don't forget to order the high mileage badge for yours.

Do yourself a favor and keep everything in the car that it came with, at least for a while until you decide if you will keep it or not. The "cool" factor on your new car is it is a Euro car. If you haven't noticed yet, many people are interested in the Euro version over the US due to lots of subtle differences, some not subtle at all. ABS brakes, Air bag, shorter more attractive front and rear bumpers, German style road warning triangle in the trunk ( worth an easy $30-40), fire extinguisher ( very hard to find and not worth losing and not finding one again), Very cool factory adjustable height headlamps ( rotating dial at headlight switch allows driver to adjust height of headlamp beam to account for additional weight in car causing lights to point too high up off road, very cool and only on Euro cars), factory Euro style headlamps ( tons of people swap their US lamps for Euro lamps and you should have the expensive Bosch brand tons of people wont spend the $ for. Not positive, but I would think the exhaust is better flowing than a US car and the engine might even put out better power due to less strick Euro regulations. On some cars the diff between a US version and a Euro car can be 10-20 horrsepower, for free...nothing to laugh at, MB engines are good and hard to get more real horsepower out of them for little money.
In any case, I am glad you went for the car, do some baseline preventitive maintenance and drive it for a while and see what you think you want to fix next, trust me, you will enjoy the car on the road. If you decide to change the stereo to use a cd player, might I recommend at least saving the old stereo to keep the car an original Euro. You might consider a cd changer in the truck, easy and hidden.
Enjoy and good luck.
PS - dealers can get you a new manual for the US versions and maybe the Euro car since you have proof of ownership, sometimes they wont order Euro parts for a non euro car, they only cost about $25. The US version will at least give you a guide you can read.

Well I'm up
Guess, I should take Enriques address w me.
wow it is on reseda
look at that
maybe he knows him too
Maybe he call s him Enri?

Might as well see Enrique as my guy told me a 83 500 sec was too old
& if you owned one you can't be worried about how much it costs
LOL
Well, I'll try
its not like I put mega miles on cars
but my shop does seem to know what they are doing & are good
but some shops don't want the older benz's

Get it registered no 1

then get it home

thanks for tha start info

first thing is to get the battery up to par
It won';t be fun to take her out & have it not start for the return trip
but guess thats what AAA or the MB service is for

He said he'd put it in charge last night
hope he remembered

Gosh don't know if they have hood locks
guess it should
he left it in front last night so we could get it out today
Just hope it was fine last night

he'll have to rig up the plates guess some wire can do for now

I'd like to take it out
but want to get it looked at
a little late

but once the battery is up it should be ok

its a diehard looked fairly new but I guess the car has sat a while

Excited

She or he has alot of nice goodies
when she was running she was quiet but sort of sounded like a turbine
kind of liked the sound

headlights did adjust he did that
all sorts of lights and the beams went up & down controlled from inside
reall nice

He knew about the Euro guess he was doing some research
just hope she passes ok in future
smog looked really good well under limits

oooh he said it came w sheepskin covers
I;ll get them well I should
guess that protected the leather
oooh & a beige car cover too
that's $100 worth of goodies right there
& can't forget the dual makeup mirror & lights on both visors
LOL
a must for the CA girls

LOL

The car is loaded & almost worth more inparts than whole
LOL

Well wish me luck

Thanks again

ABSOLUTE spot on advice and comments.

Hah, this car would be worth far more in the sum of its parts.

The guys on Benzworld.com would be like piranhas on a cow in the Amazon.

They would strip this car to a shell in an hour and kill each other trying to get those precious EUROZE] parts off it:

These parts are worth $$$$$$$ and the people wil PAY!

Euro climate control

Front and rear euro bumpers.

Euro 2:24 rear differential

Euro headlights

Euro headlight dashboard thumbwheel adjuster

Euro 500 engine

Euro exhaust system and headers

Chromed wheels

Warndriecke Euro trunk mount triangle

Euro fire extinguisher ...........drool.......

Tool kit (Metric)

I have seen those Benzworld boyz in action, they are a rough crowd, they would beat the $hit out of each other to pull parts off a car like this.

No mercy at ALL

They know EXACTLY what this car is. (Though most average people don't)

"Makeup mirrors" hahaha

But they don't have what everyone REALLY wants. CUP HOLDERS

(But performance parts have good ones, I got one, with wood trim, for the door!)

PERFECT, BUT THEN I DROPPED MY LIPSTICK INTO MY COFFEE!!!

None of this happened. You just dreamed it did.

Then you woke up in a puddle.

Just kidding.

You had better call Enrique first. He is pretty popular, and may not take people without an appointment. Especially ones he does not know.
Read the stories about the guy, he is VERY popular because he doesn't charge "book rate" only as long as it takes.

And his rates are not expensive, but he does Mercedes only and knows the SEC very very well. They say he will NOT fix stuff that doesn't need it.

And has been fixing Mercedes for a LOOOOONG time, used to be the manager of the Sewrvice Dept at Beverly Hills Mercedes Benz a dealer whose customers would not suffer gladly, fools and boors.

I need to take my car down there to this guy, I have been thinking about that for a year now. I need a vacation bad and I want him to look at the antenna, sunroof and airconditioning on the car.

Ugh I will have to drive to LA with no airconditioning from here, I will be sweating like a whore in a hot tub by the time I got there. But I might get to have lunch with some Mercedeshop friends when I am there. Stay a couple of days if I have to in some motel.

Good luck. Hopefully you will get the car transferred without trouble, and come out with a set of license plates for it today!!

Yikes
I hope I can sleep at night
used to worry about the 70 trans am
had it over 19 years
sold it for over $10K
so guess it went to pay for this one
much more usable & practical

Well lets hope in the brown it doesn't scream too much attention
but when I saw it the 2nd time in person
its a masterful peice of machinery

Well, thanks
guess I couldn't go too wrong then
the price was right
I'm close by & we can deal w the title at AAA
as it went thru 2 hands to get to me wo benefit of title transfer
good thing is the chain of title will only be 2
Don't know who had it the first 4 years or how it got to the US

How do they know if it was stolen
guess you wouldn't steal a car & then donate it
would be in parts already

Vin is on front & firewall & doorjambs
its the car
LOL

perhaps the owner died or was so financially well off
or just was charitable with the car they didn;t use for at least 4 years

Well better get off to bank...
so we can get this show on the road

Well, thats why I said take his number with me
never know I may run into trouble
hope not
best to get it home & set the battery on the charger
uuuugh
I hate that
been thru it w Volvo this winter when it sat too long while I was waiting to get tow & $ to fix front end
I got all new arms or whatever they are
the front end bushings for the volvo come as one big unit
pricey...

Well I have no ACin volvo
didn't use it too much
but on a long drive in 95 its really dangerous to be without
heat clouds the senses
can make for a potential mistakeon the road
not good

Well, if you make the trip down
be sure to let us know
I;d say Enrique is less than 20 milesof me
not bad

It's home
alot of idleing
saw oil dip below 2 on still
then goes back to pin 3 with movement
Road well

Was a joy

Problem 1
My driveway in down a concrete ramp
the cat converter is so low to the ground that it scraped at the highpoint as it was going down
I got out to look
it was touching
I didn;t know how bad
I didn't know what to do
chance doing down or leave it on the street
yikes
but someone came walking by & watched as I went down
guess it was ok but it scraped the sidewalk

What the heck do I do with that
may be a betterway to go down
maybe straight is better than at an angle or viceversa

arrghh
not to good to not be able to get a car in & out

Trans am had same problem as its piphes were low to the ground
& it did scrape a bit too

Well its safe in garage behind Ms Volvo

Wheels are SND not SMB
glove comp says orif were 205/70/ 14's

It got a lil hotter than 80C
it was sitting quite a bit at idle while I fixed the seat & mirrors
& then again at the top of the hill

Guess its no Volvo for going around mountains and steep inclines

Everything went ok at AAA
he took me in case
There were 2 forms
one from orig owner to the charity
then one from the charity which I put my name in
it was blank
Guess that's how he does it
Seems he has contacts w them

They sometimes get cars from very wealthy clients
who do not want to bother to sell it...

So thats the story

Need a plate bracket
couldn;t rig it
so came home with plate in back window

Hey headliner came down from back rear drivers side
came out of seams & is hanging
have to get that back in
its in good shape
not sure if it was glued or it has to go tight in the seam w a tool

It was all OK til the muffler scraping
My heart was coming out of my throat
hoping it wouldn;t put any pressure on ex manifold connection as muffler was pushed up a bit

arrrghhh

got 4 keys
have to check the paperwork in glve comp
He still has some
supposedly
I may never see it
just the way it goes
I got the car

May have to give the =battery a good charge

I didn;t use AC going home
I know it taxes engine
just want to make sure everything is ok
Just glad its registered & home safe

This was my savings
Money hard earned by my Mom to help me live on pay bills
etc
I hope I spent it wisely
I suppose its not wasted
as I could recoupe it on a sale

OOOH cooled off
its hot out there
hve to learn where all the controls are
they are in german
LOL

has 2 manuals in Eng
one 380 sel sec
one 380 se 500 sel 500 sec

WOOOOHOO. You just dodged a huge bullet, and registered the car successfully.

A lot of us here at Mercedesshop really thought this car had a HUGE problem with the cdhain of title, some said you should run away.

But we worked it out over the net, and the seller co operated, even though the car kind of transferred in a kneebone connected to the thighbone kind of a way.

Itg is country up here (not like SF at all) you would not BELIEVE the the white trash and meth heads driving around in old Nissan pickup trucks and b eat up toyotas with the RED 90-day DMV red "suspense" stickers in the back window, alloweing the caqr to run legally "temporarily" until the DMV and Title problems are worked out.

You just escaped a HUGE pile of problems by getting a seller like that.

Presumably, you got fresh new Cali plates, in some offices down there the plates are now in the 6ANRxxx series at the DMV in LA now, and beyond, but the DMV services in the AAA offices are always behind, so if you went there you probably got a 5Zx-xxx series set of plates for the car.

Here is a little known trick for more history on the car. Enter either the OLD license plate number (that you copied off the OLD pink slip before you gave it to the AAA) OR THE VIN # that you have here (it is free!)

http://www.autorepair.ca.gov/vehtests/pubtstqry.aspx

and if you get a valid hit, it will give you the name, address, car description, date and mileage where the smog checks were done - passes and failures - for about the past 10 years.

It gives a clue as to the history of where the car lived and what its mileage was.

You could try it for your Volvo too, and see how it matches up wih the experiences you remembered it for the long time you owned it.

Interesting fun and free.

The next time you are at your nearest dealer, and there are lots of them in LA, stop by the service dept. and ask for a print out and explanation of the VMI codes of your car. Also called a VMI - vehicle master inquiry.
I do NOT know if they have these in English for Euro cars like yours, but they might.

Before you leave the dealer, stop by PARTS dept. and ask for a pair of dealer
license plate frames. Just have chosen a dealership that has nice looking ones on the car. (I went to Calstar Mercedes (GLENDALE)

Make sure they are the nice metal ones not cheap plastic ones. They will be FREE to you. Beverly Hills Mercedes Benz and WI Simonson in Santa Monica, or the dealers in Laguna Niguel and Newport Beach are very nice choices.
eydon't advertise these, but it is good paperwork to have, it will state the original selling date, and place of the car, and the dealer where it was sold new in Germany, and a complete and correct list of equipment on the car. ALSO they show (in codes) ALL warranty work performed at the dealer on the car, with date, dealer and mileage.

As to the license plate brackets, I posted a link to a discussion about these in Benzworld but grab a front and a rear one, out of a junkyard anywhere that has W126 Mercedes cars, I think there is a big place in San Fernando Valley (Sun Valley ?) or around, any will work.

Just take a philllips screwdriver, I think, and there are 2 screws holding them on. A can of WD 40 to spray on them if they are stuck. (take the screws home too.)

ANY W126: - Mercedes will do - a 280SE, 380SE, 380SEL, 500SE, 500SEL, 500SEC, 420SEL, 300SD, 300SDL, 560SEL, 560SEC, ANY of them, the front and rear brackets are what you want.

I would bet, you could get them for REALLY cheap, maybe $5 or $10 each if you pulled them yourself

Oh how I love scrounging in junkyards for stuff like this, but haven't had to for years. I so wish I could do it for you. (On fact a MercedesShop internet meeting of Diesel drivers I went to in Sacramento in January finished at a junkyard, (after our lunch at a cafe) and you can see pictures of it, and the Diesel Mercedes drag races (funny!!!--so slow) they had outside there.

Then go to a rundown body shop - and I know they are all over LA!!! and ask the owner of one if he could install them on the center part of the front and back bumper of your car.

On the front, for fun, ask how much it would cost to construct and paint in Manganese Brown a custom filler panel for the front bumper. to cover up the screw holes in the Euro bumper on the front.

As cheap as possible, do you speak good Spanish? I bet you could get one of those guys to do it cheap, those Mexicans do REAL good work some of them.

(LOL, we are talking abouot a $50,000 Mercedes and how to get $5 junkyard parts) but hey I am on a budget too and have a car like this, who cares?

Now, On to the next issue: The exhaust pipe and dragging muffler.

Hey, your good
Guessed it

I got 5Z plates

Lets see
Been taking pics of undercarriage

It's not the muffler that was hitting its the I think cat converter
center cannister
when the car front is down the hill it seems at a midpoint the belly of the car touches undtil the rear wheel can lift it
the driveway is bowed concave if you get the drift

It does happen with low clearance cars

I see good big sway bars least on rear in back
looks like a 12 bolt diff
lots of cobwebs under there
but its clear of rust on the body
some on springs & such & muffler pipes
well thats disposable

I got a nice AAA
she seemed to not be worried
but she did have me put my name on the pink slip next to the charity
& on the bill of sale transfer
She sort of connected the gap
She could see it went to the charity wo bennifit of registration
thats sort of a dealer
& then was sold to a privateparty myself as the title purchase whatever was never put in his name
left blank.

I guess it might not go so well if you took it out of state?
He was there just in case of a problem
but he didn't think there would be any

Actually it worked out quite well
I took a bus to his house
We went to AAA in his car
& then back to his house to pay for the car.
He let me register it wo benefit of him having his money

I would think that was very special of him
he must have trusted me
or I guess he figured w my size
I'd never wrestle the car from him & run with it
LOL

Still he went out of his way to sell me the car
but perhaps he liked that I was local...

Who knows

I don't think he has any morepaper work though
he may but the way he is
he might have just said that before
I caught him when he showed me the title

I don't apprecaite the story
but in a way its a one owner car least 20 years.

I don;t have the sheepskin seat covers he said it came with
Who knows what condi they are in
but he said he's get them for me
they are in his shop...

I saw the pink slip
it had a vanity plate
I won't make publlic as they still live in agoura hills as per the other bill of sale.

I found a mans name on a bill for the alarm in 87
he was a DR so this must have been his wifes car.

I would suppose a Drs wife woudl at least try to take care of the car
& it wasn;t abused.

So maybe I did get lucky?
Its l;oaded & the electrical & AC works

Gosh your up a creek wo a panel if some of them fail
You can't even get the gas tank lid open,,,,
& thats important on a car like this

I need to get gas
its on the last line
not R
but today I was hot & I just wanted to get it safe in the garage

I did fear if the battery wasn't up to charge
that shutting it down to get gas & not being able to start it again
would not be a good thing to chance

Gosh there are really no bumpers
You get hi its really right at the car
Don't want to run into anything
all those goodies in front will get messed.

I will have to get the license plate bracket
He said pep boys have
but don;t know if he understands
Anyway it would see the lisence would have to be drilled w holes more on outside as they are not lining up
but perhaps the bracket will fix that

There were a few screws in glove compt
hopefull one fits the rear holes
as there is only one screw back there
Guess thats the leastof my worries

2. Muffler and exhaust pipe dragging? Urgent problem.

Urgent problem but with a CHEAP fix. (Maybe).

a) the problem.

You know I had this same damn thing happen to me ever since I came up her to the Sierras.

First time, on Hwy 49 by Auburn I heard a noise, and people were shouting at me, I did not know what happened, and finally a HIghway Patrol car pulols me over.

The whole exhaust pipe, pre-cat, catalytic converter, and muffler was dragging along the ground and throwing up huge sparks - fire danger too.

Didn't get a ticket, but had the cop call AAA and got the AAA towtruck out, instead flatb edding me 20 miles to Grass Valley, he wired up the muffler a little bit, so it was (Barely ) off the ground, enough to drive like a hillbilly in an old truck into town, and the muffler shop.

b) the solution

Well from old age (13 year old car) the muffler hangers just finally wore out.

They are affixed to the 560SEC (I assume the Euro 500SEC is very similar) in three places: near the front, near the middle, and behind the muffler at the tailpipe.)

When the first one lets go it puts pressure on the 2nd and third one, and when the next one goes, it is too much and the whole thing lets go, and you have a draggin' wagon with sparks flying.

Understand my car is lowered for a racier look, and yours is too,so they naturally sit lower to the ground than OUR Volvos did

(We have soooo much in common!!!) (Just Cars of course)

and I am willing to bet that your muffler hangers are about to let go at any moment.

You need to fix this as soon as possible.

My problem is that the same thing happened to me TWO more times before I got wise.

I went to a cheap muffler shop (limping in) like to the emergency room with the rear of the muffler held on with the tailpipe to the car like something from the Beverly Hillbillies.

$20 later and 3 sets of Round rubber donut muffler hangers put back on the car, and it was like new.

BY THE WAY, on the pictures you posted last night of the car, you could see the exhaust pipe hanging pretty low, and I thought, hmmmm, that looks familiar, been there , done that...

But, this was repeated shortly again, the "New" Autozone hangars (about $3 each) all failed TWICE in the next year and a half, and everytime I looked at the car, it was with distrust.

Finally I went to a new place one day when I noticed one day the tailpipe looked wrong, a little low.

To my horror, the muffler hanger youcould see under the bumper was hanging grotesquely low, about to let go AGAIN!!!

I had it fixed again. Just 35 dollars.

A couple of times I had it happen again, and was so mad I was ready to ditch the car.

But then the FOURTH time the guy finally got wise. He ORDERED Mercedes Benz FACTORY exhaust muffler hangers.

I don't know how to put pictures of them here, but they are NOT the $3 Atozone donut hangars.

They are FACTORY Mercedes Benz ones, they are SQUARE and much thick and tougher, than the cheapies from Autozone. They are about $6 each, either from the dealer or any Autoparts store like all over the place in LA
so I think it was $18.

However he feltr sorry for me as it happened just a month after the last set, he put on ,and didnt charge me anything!!!

It was free, and he put in an insurance claim on the old rubber donuts even though trhis time I have official Mercedes hangars like the elves in Stuttgart would have wanted.

This is my BEST guess as to what might be the problem you are having.

Cost to you to fix if you do it now, at cheap muffler place. Cheap.

Cost if you wait> Horrendous, if you lose the catalytic converter or muffler and the ezxhaust on the highway: at least $250 for a muffler, $700 for the catalytic, and maybe $100 for the exhaust pipes = say $1000 -

But hey. 24 yrs and 196,000 miles is a goode run on a set of muffler hangars, if I am right. You had a damn good run out of them. Let's not wait, until too late and you really NEED that beautiful eruo fire exgtinguisher.

STATUS of this - URGENT.

Next: Repair history warning.

Hey thanks fir the link

put in the plate
says car 83
looks like they also had a 380

Date starts around 97
guess thats when they were getting computerized

Bad thing is with this car
it seems to fail all the first tests
& has to be retested

I hope the euro has enough to clear the smog tests

that would be a problem having to try to get it to pass

ODD thing is if you put in the vin
it still pulls up the 380 so maybe the tech made a model mistake?
