Forgive me if I'm misunderstanding you, suginami, but the W124 coupe rear deck lid is indeed different than the sedan lid, and it's not just the insert.
It is lower; ie it doesn't have the extra loft that the sedan lid has. From the edge moving toward the center, the sedan lid rises about an inch higher than the coupe lid. Also, if you look at the distance between the top of the bumper and the bottom of the tail light assembly, you'll notice that the coupe's distance is aproximately 1/2 inch less. These dimensions are not very great, and may not be immediately noticable until you see a coupe right next to a sedan. But in combination, they definitely give the coupe (and the cabriolet, I presume) a totaly different look and feel than the sedan.

O.K., you might be right if the dimensions are different than the sedan, but the trunk lid did not change like the sedans did for 94 and 95. It stayed the same. It did not get the chrome strip. It still has the black plastic strip.

I'll check...
My next-door neighbor has a '94? or '95? W124 Cabrio...I'll check it out tomorrow if she's home and let you guys know. I'm almost positive that it doesn't have the "black plastic strip", but I could be wrong.

Trust me, the coupes and cabriolet's never got the chrome strip. They always kept the black plastic strip.
I just saw one yesterday. There is a shop called Classic Auto Gallery of Glendora. I check in there all the time to see what cars they have for sale. The owner has a 1995 W124 cabriolet. He is the original owner. It has a black plastic strip running along the trunk between the tail lights like all 1986-1993 W124 sedans. There is no chrome strip. Why MB didn't give coupes and cabriolets the updated trunk lid like the sedans I will never know. Maybe it's because of the low number of coupes and cabriolets that were sold. It goes without saying that wagons didn't get the chrome strip either.

The first guy took it off. Notice that it is right-hand drive. He removed the model badge and mono-chormed the paint scheme. To the best of my knowledge, all coupes had the two-tone paint job. The second is a convert. All convertables had the third cyclops brake light in the trunk lid (since the "traditional" third brake light does not work with the drop top).

Kinda wish mine had the cyclops brake eye in the trunk too. Got the idiot light on the dash board go off one day and since my car was due for service, just had my mechanic (Enrique of Mr. MB Motors) take care of it. My cyclops light was burnt out and Enrique was skeptical about the plastic housing falling apart due to age and sun deteioration (sp.). Luckily, the PO kept the car in the garage most of the time and the plastic wasn't brittle. I now keep a towel over the back dash to protect it (as well as the leather of the rear seat, etc.) Also keep towels over all of the wood when parked in the sun. My wood isn't cracked (yet) and I'd like to keep it as nice as possible.

Under the "submit reply" button, theres a section for additional options and you can use the 'attach files' area, unless its on a website, then the little button with the mountains works.

Well, with a 400 litre v8 in a 124 coupe, whether a 300 or 320CE, , you will be a wolf in sheeps clothing. AFAIK all 124 coupes have a six cylinder engine...at least those badged 300CE or E320, which would be 88 thru 95, I think.
Look at it like a 500E.. normal 124 body, but a tiger under the hood. ![]() Good luck with the conversion. |
