Mobil 1 0W-40 is here!!
Just went to the Mobil 1 website and they now list 0W-40 as an available weight. It states it meets the strict A3 ACEA European rating and is approved by VW/Audi, BMW, Saab, Porsche and Volvo. Oddly, Mercedes was not listed. I don't know if it's a matter of getting permission to list their name. I don't use Mobil 1 right now. My Benz gets Delo 400 15W-40 and my Passat gets Valvoline Synpower 5W-40. This oil also meets the ACEA A3 rating and is approved for "BMW High performance Synthetic oil requirements; VW 500, 502, 505, Mercedes 229.1, all Rolls Royce/Bentley cars and all Porsche performance requirements.

I've always been impressed with syn oils of 0W. I remember Castrol coming out with it first about 5 years ago (I think). Impressed as I may be, I'm quite loathe to try it out especially in a MB engine. I wouldn't mind it if it was a Japanese car. It could be pure prejudice as I always think of MB engines as being hardy and thus would need more than 0W.

0W-40 is definetly too thin for higher mileage cars, I don't plan on using it in my Benz. I may at some point, use it in my VW. Around here in NJ the Synpower I use is not readily available. I have to go to NAPA and order it. It doesn't cost anymore or less than Mobil 1. It cost me $4.69 a quart. At this point, NAPA and other auto stores don't have this weight on their shelves. I have read on another message board, VW Vortex, that Synpower 5W-40 is on the shelf out west. It usually takes 2 weeks for the oil to come in, so I once ordered 2 cases (12 quarts), just to stock up. Once I use that oil up I may try Mobil 1 0W-40, IF the local stores have it on their shelves.
Ymsin, I don't recall Castrol having a "0" oil. There were many comments in past "oil" threads about wishing for Mobil 1 to bring over their 0W-40, so when I happened to find this info. on their website, I thought I would let people know.

I recall the past threads stating that Mobil 1 0W40 was only available in bulk (through oil change facilities and certain dealers. Mobil's website may acknowledge that 0W40 exists but it is still not available at retail stores in the Chicago suburbs.
BTW the local Target stores sell Mobil 1 at $3.00/qt.

1st 0w40 add spotted
Full page ad for Mobil 1, 0w40 in Pacific Magazine, August edition. This magazine is published in Hawaii, but aimed at Guam, Samoa, and other Pacific Islands. The ad is specifically aimed at DIY'ers. I don't know beans about advertising, but I can't imagaine why they would target such an obscure and tiny market. Still have not seen product or advertising in this part of the world. Should be interesting to see how it is priced relative to the Delvac 1. Looks like they made the bottle a fancy shape and colored it gold. FWIW, I switched to Delvac 1 in the 4 Runner, now at 6500 miles with no problems and no consumption. I will probably switch the 2 diesels to the Delvac 1 as soon as I use up my existing stock of Rotella.
