Smile Rebuilt transmissions from ADSITCO

Chaps,

My wife's 1995 E320 will need a new transmission [139K miles]. Our local MB independent shop estimates a $5K job.

ADSITCO sells rebuilt transmissions included rebuilt torque converter for $1,795.00 plus shipping.

ADSITCO is a reputable company but would like to know if anyone has experience with their rebuilt parts - engine, transmissions, etc. Do they use genuine MB parts?

Thanks much in advance.

Orazio

I have heard less than good things about them. Perhaps try a reputable transmission shop in you area.

I have not heard good things, I would check with your MB dealer, they offer a factory rebuilt (2yr warr), a little over 5K...less without the torque converter.

We can do quite a bit better then 5K and our transmission are built to w/ stand far more torque and abuse compared to the original boxes

ReMan Transmission

(And, No I do not work for or have any financial recompense from these nice people)

Peter Schmid Transmission AKA MZF,Inc.

They just quoted me about $1900.00 (with the core sent to them) + freight.

ADSITCO has a horrible reputation. Avoid them at all costs. Period. There used to be a detailed thread about those
thieves, but I can't find it at the moment. Here's some light reading in the meantime....

I'd get the tranny done by Jonathan at Blue Ridge MB, or by Peter Schmid. Or your local MB dealer. $5k is a ripoff, though. BTW, I don't think anyone "rebuilds" torque converters. They just clean & test old ones, and offer a warranty on them. It's not an item that can be disassembled and repaired.

Thanks Dave

Just to stand out a little our TC'ers are cut open, inspected and we use torrington bearings in place of the stock bits..they're a fairly Stout TC to begin with but again, it's the little parts that can bite you in the end!

I started this upgrade after killing the bearing in my white 560...

Why did the transmission fail with 139k miles???

Poor maintaince?

A transmission should last over 200,000 with proper maintaince

The local rebuilder disassembles TC's as well, though I don't know what else they do with them while they're apart.

Barring that, I would be highly leery of just flushing and reinstalling one, at least if there had been metalic debris running around the failed tranny.

I would like to clarify that the tranny did not fail, it makes a noise when it is in reverse otherwise, it drives fine but the mechanic said that if the condition persists it needs to be rebuilt.

My question is: why is it making noise, why did the car need new lifters, R&R cylinder head, ram shafts, gaskets, you name it at a cost of $3,400 when my car has been religiously maintained every 4K miles? It was done this week.

Please notice that we bought the car new in 1995 and the mechanic is a well established MB only independent dealer, we have been going there for almost 15 years.

Could it be that it is a stop and go car driven slowly by my wife for just a few miles a day? I am at a loss here.

You don't yet need a transmission rebuild yet. The whole point of repairing a transmission with only a clicking noise in reverse is to get it early, and do less than a full rebuild. Resigned to a full rebuild you might as well drive till it quits - which in my experience could be as much as several years from now.

Depends...I've seen the click stay like that for ages, I've seen it progress in a matter of months.. Either way @ that mileage his reverse clutches will be Spent and given the driving the car experiences the rest of them will be tired as well.

Short distance/stop and go is considered to be extreme duty...and yes, that had a Direct effect on why all the head work was required. We just had an M104 in, 305K on the clock..head gasket was leaking and All it needed was exhaust guides, everything else was Beautiful..! This fellow drives all over the country, lots of long distance (and by his account high speed!) which is where these cars are truly in their element.

My 92 500SEL transmission started making clicking noises at about 90K while backing up, it was serviced at 50K and again about 90K they seemed to think it was an indication of impending failure. MB does not rebuild any more so about 95K it started to engage very slowly in reverse, and then lurch.
Bottom line, got quotes from various people who claimed they could do it cheap, went with MB rebuilt (2year warranty). Of course they found other things like seeping lines, it did not need a converter. $3500 for trans, plus labor and other things.
I tend to agree with Jonathan

I don't claim to do them cheap, just that we could do one for less then 5K! I don't see how some of these companies do all that SHOULD be done and charge what they charge..

Typically unless the transmission has failed catastrophically a new/reman torque converter isn't neccesary.

I know of one fellow who just bought a 95 E320 Coupe, has a New Benz transmission installed..it's been less then 10K and it's already acting up! Of course they'll fix it under warranty but there's no reason for that to have happened!!!
