Necessary to Change Injectors?

Everything runs fine but I felt that its perhaps timely to change all the 6 fuel injectors. I have the people at the workshop telling me its not necessary unless its faulty. But I feel that since its relatively inexpensive - $12 each/Bosch - it might be worth the while to have it changed.

If I did change the injectors, would I notice anything significant? Or should I just take the advise and leave it until it goes kaput?

Figured that out Manny. The reason I thought of this was my concern at the injectors being more than 10 years old ...

Keep well.

Don't Change Them

I have a fuel-injected gasolene pickup truck with 340,000 miles on the original injectors. Just put in a fuel injector cleaner into the gas tank every few months to keep them from getting gummed up.

Amazing they could be so reliable.

Hey Manny, I wasn't offended. Far from it. I was thrilled to share your comment!

Anyway, at the dealer's this morning, he gave me an illustration of 2 injectors in his hand. One new, one used.

He said that even in the absence of any "baroque" injectors, the new injector would respond like this ... {{{spraying his hands wide like this ..... }}}}}}}

And in the old one - its fine, but it sprays like this .... [[[[[his hands gropping the air like plucking blossoms from nowhere]]]]]]

He then went on about the size of the hole in the injectors and why its important to stick with OEM parts and not get other parts, etc, etc ...

Then he leaned back his chair and said "you'd definitely feel a difference in response".

So - I might just think about it .... 2 to 3 needed for the job.

Kerry,
If you do change them it would be a good idea to use fuel injection cleaner 2 or 3 times a year.

Thinking same thing

Kerry,
I was thinking the same thing as you are...my 2.6 190E is abit slow onthe responce and there is a small fuel pressure leak somewhere that is bleeding down enought to keep the car from starting the first try in the morning. Thought it would deffinitely help the responce to put in new injectors....WHERE are you finting them for $12! I am seeing about $21-30 each for a 2.6l 190E injector. Maybe difference in car but 50%? In any case, I'd love to get them for $12...maybe the place would have a pair of fuel pumps for less than the $180 each I am finding!
It the least the fuel milage should be increased and at the gas prices we pay it couldn't hurt! I agree that the car has to run better with new injectors over the 11 year old ones I have now. Maybe int he swap I will catch the fuel pressure leak while I am in there!

Its amazing how the "technical service consultants" at the garage react when I spoke of the injection cleaner. They said that its better to get cleaner fuel than to put this cleaning agent into the tank. The damage, as they claimed to have seen, goes far worse than just stuffing up on the injectors that ultimately they concurred that a car runs better without the cleaners. In some cases, as they showed me a used injector, it cloggs the nozzle.

I think I will change the injectors in a week or so, and shall duly make my report known.

Meanwhile, I suppose it might be a good idea to reassess the debate on injection cleaners ...

Good day to all,

If you can buy injectors for $12 I sure wouldn't waste any money on cleaner.

Does the rest of the world subsidize Malasia. That price is 30% below wholesale in the US; much less than US dealers pay. If I recall, you never pay for labor. Seems Malasia is the place to own a MB. Glad I don't work there!!!

Malaysia is the place to buy parts

Steve,
I agree with you, at $12 ea, change them just to see what happens. Maybe even see if you can order injectors that have a slightly larger output just for the experiment.
I have seriously thought about changing injectors but want to to the check valves on the fuel pumps first to kill the pressure bleed down gremlin I have. Cheapest Bosch injectors I found are $21 ea and the seats and seals are extra. Still running about $150 with shipping and all the seals. Apparently we have a little markup raquet going on here int he US.
What a great price on them!

This is what I would have done on that day ..

Walk into the dealers' spare-part shop and take the 6 boxes of Bosch injectors at RM50 each ... thats about $12-00. I'd then go to the workshop and fit that in with 2 to 3 hours of labour. The workshops' bill would be about RM20-00, or $6-00.

All this on credit, till I decide to pay the parts shop and workshop - payment terms usually 30 days with implied warranty. That means, if the parts dont measure up, or something goes wrong, someone's not going to be paid until its rectified. But usually its paid coz if it was a faulty part, then the part would be replaced at no extra cost and the labour expanded at no extra charge.

I will then decide and make an opinion on whether it was a good decision to have the injectors changed.

Life goes on.

Everytime we bring our C 280 to the dealer for service they add Texron to the gas.
My be a better idea is to run F I cleaner before you replace injectors. This would clean the system and clog the old injectors.
Just like in the old days when we`d beat the crap out of a carberated car before changing spark plugs.
