Removing W201 Rearview Mirror

does anyone have any tips on removing a 190E rearview mirror? i've practiced a few times at the junkyard, but there are a few that are extremely stiff and difficult to remove and I end up just warping and bending the thin sheet metal where the metal spring bracket bolts to.

I need to replace my mirror this weekend and I don't want to mess up the mounting location of my mirror. maybe I should just cut away the mirror stalk until i can see the metal bracket screws and pop the spring out on the bench?

You talking about the interior or exterior mirror? Interior is a breakaway design. Just pull it out. If it's sticky spray some WD40 in it then pull it out. Not hard. I've done it on a 25 year old car without the help of WD and it just came right out. You're probably doing it wrong.

i can just pull and yank it out, but the result of that is usually bending the metal that the bracket screws into. then when you put a mirror back, it is loose because the bracket doesnt bolt in properly anymore.

most of the older junkyard cars have weaker springs so its easier to remove. but the ones with nicer kept interiors, have stiffer mirror springs so they dont really want to come out.

I've always just pulled them out too. Never had a big issue. even on a well-kept car. The technique is best described as just jerking it, just a fast tug on it. Possibly the issue is just that; the technique. If you try to pull it out gradually, possibly the springloaded pins are more resistant to compressing that spring? I've always had way more trouble installing it. I admit to breaking a windshield once on a 126 coupe back when I worked on cars, because the extension I was using to pound it back in (the hand-end of a hammer) slipped and bashed into the center/top of the windshield.
The bracket that attaches to the headliner area I believe is held in with 3 countersunk-head machine screws and should tighten easily, if they are loose.

Push toward the windshield, that's how it's designed to release, two screws in the rear you're pulling against.
