Angry '94 E320 Cold Start

Can you belive it!!??
I had the same problem on my 86 300E. I still have the posts on the board here.

I just got the '94 E320 and........
Now, it s 44F this morning (per outside temp gage) and the car starts after 4 tries and the Check Eng. Light is on.
This is the second time, this happened. Except the last time it did not set a light.
Also, it was 31F the other day and it satrted right up. Whats with the 44F temperature.
Absolultey no warm start problem.

So now what?? Which sensor could be possible causing this. Maybe coolant temp??
Also, what injection system does the 94 E320 have, is it LH Jetronic, or Motronic? I have a pulse counter, (I am still waiting on my manuals) can somebody guide me on the socket, please.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Mino

Time to learn all about diagnostics on the E320. Do a search on engine diagnostics on this model, especially post by Auther Dalton. You will find all the info you need to start.

Your car has the HFM fuel injection system...The Coolant sensor for the fuel system is the one on the coolant pump near the front of the engine. It is the big black sensor. Not any of the small ones.

The main problems with these are wiring harness breakdown and throttle actuator failure.

Use the search feature for previous engine wiring harness discussions. If yours has not been replaced, start there. Ed

I would check the easiest first, coolant temp. sensor. The resistance should be around 4K ohm (I am not sure what 44F is in Celsius). The resistance should drop when the temperature increases. At 40C coolant temp. it should be 1K Ohm, at 80C 300 Ohm. These values are from the MB 103 engine manual but they should be the same. If the resistance is infinite replace the sensor.
Good luck.

I am going to get the code checked today. I am in the process of ordering the manuals though.
It appears that it would be the temp sensor. I will verify and compare to the 86 300E temp sensor.
Is HFM a BOSCH injection system?
Also engine harness???? My goodness, I have never heard of such a thing going bad, that has to be just a terrible repair, for it to be done right.

Thank you, and I will report back.

Is there a way to verify whether or not the harness has been replaced? maybe the prior owner has done it under warranty. Car has only 67K.
