infared key not active

cannot figure. infared key will not lock - unlock. in the middle of christmas shopping. Just stopped working. The battery is OK I had it checked out. I do remember double pressing transmitter to open trunck. after that kaput! the re-syncro steps outlined in the owners manual have been followed - but no joy. 1996 E-320. Any thoughts. Please advise. Jack
