I think that when the tips begin to get carbonized, the starter takes a longer time to start the engine and as a result the added pressure causes the weak point in your fuel supply to weep a bit.
Her engine doesnt have a distributor, it has coils instead.

If you find any carbon tracked plugs you should replace the connector on the coil also. An ASR issue after getting the engine wet points to a throttle actuator problem. Whether it's the actuator, it's harness, or the connecting harness will have to be diagnosed. If you search "throttle actuator" here you will probably get more than you want to read.
I completely agree here. The M104 does NOT like water. I had so much water in my plug holes (yes i made the mistake of cleaning the engine), that the check engine light came on, it barely idles, and pop's and sputterd like a 60's american muscle car. It did not have anything to do with the ASR.

Another thing - I discovered a fuel leak just in front of the driver's rear wheel also. Must be the pump or filter I suppose. After I get all of these problems corrected, I think it'll be time to trade this one in. I've put as much time and money into it as I can at this point.

Well now you know where they get the saying, "The most expensive mercedes is an older one"

The fuel leak couldnt be from rust or corrosion could it? That would be a pita. If its a union at a hose, its probably not that big of a deal to fix.

Just my personal opinion here and will probably get heckled for it, I think the W210's are JUNK. My indy thinks so, the local MB dealer thinks so, the list goes on. MB knows they were junk but took a blind eye when it came to certain warranty repairs. Makes me wonder why most, if not all german auto manufactures offer 12 year rust warranty, while MB still only offers 4 years. My mom had a brand new 2001 E320 and it was completely rusted out at 30K. They make hyundias that will outlast that by at least 7 years. While hers does have the M112 modular V6 engine and you have the venereable M104 inline 6 (i think is better by far), they are essensially the same car.

List the ASR codes and hopefully we can help you proceed from there. Good luck. I went through this with my last car. I wish it didnt have ASR. I had to replace a host of things, including the neutral safety switch.

I found the fuel leak. The fuel pump itself is leaking at the fitting on the pressure side. I guess this means that I'm looking at a new fuel pump on top of whatever else is wrong now. To date, I've replaced the transmission, a majority of the a/c system and several front end parts. Now I'm staring down the barrel of a new ETA and fuel pump! I feel bad for the next owner of this car because I'm sure there will be much more to come soon.

That just might need a new copper ring in between the two and tighten it down nice and tight. Don't replace the pump.

Here's a picture of where the leak is:

If I turn that hex head fitting, I'll break the plastic cover. The end of the pump appears to be a press fit. Any ideas?

Wow! If your positive its leaking there, you might be right, and need a new one. Bummer. That pump differs alot from my 95. Im assuming you only have the one fuel pump as apposed to the duals. Im sorry for all headaches. I find with these cars, when it rains it pours...You can try tightening it a little. What do you have to lose.

Edit: Does anyone know if the ETA out of a 95 E320 (M104) is the same as the ETA out of her 96 E320? I would assume they are the same, since both M104's. And if so, what is a fair price for it?

Yep, I'm sure that's where it was leaking from. Ethanol left a nice tell-tale stain on the fitting right where it was escaping. I just ordered a new pump and it should be here in 3-4 days. Maybe the harness, ETA or whatever got wet will dry out in the mean time and I'll be able to trade it in quickly. I've been looking at the Infiniti G series sedans. Any opinions on those?

Use some of the gas tank repair glue and coat it in there to seal it. You have nothing to lose if you're gonna get a new one anyway. I have fixed many leaks on my boat with that stuff.

Smile I must be living right or something...

The nice man in the big brown truck delivered my new fuel pump yesterday afternoon. I promptly installed it and checked for leaks - All good, no leaks. Next, I took it out for a ride to see if the ASR light and display message would pop back up - Nope! I guess allowing it to sit out in the sun with the hood up for a few days let whatever got wet to dry out. I am sooooo happy and relieved right now! Time to SELL! SELL! SELL! Infiniti G series sedan here I come!

Thank you all for your help and suggestions.

Christine
