Th E500 is completely different beast and animal than the e400/e320 pair. I always find it amusing how people lump the e500 with the e400 All suspension parts from an e400, not from an e500, will fit well on an e320.

A 500E has the same front doors, roof, hood trunklid and glass as other W124s. FWIW the rear doors encorporate some of the rear flare, beginning mid door (which is why the rear flare is less pronounced). Those flares allow for a wider track, which is why none of the suspension bits are common to other W124s; however, several items such as springs and rollbars can be fitted to other models in the range, but sometimes require modifications.

Interesting. I read that the W124 was modified considerably to accept the M119 5.0l engine. Are you saying that the same modifications weren't necessary to fit the M119 4.2l engine?

And wouldn't that be E420?

I always thought a fun project would be to 'upgrade' an E420 to a 5.0l M119.

The 500E incorporates fog lights while other lesser (?) w124 have none
Wheels are also different. The 500E has 16in. wheels ans larger tires as standard equipment.

The modifications to fit the 119 4 engine were not as significant a change as for the 119 5. From what I have read the subframe was altered somewhat for the E500.

Here is a quote from a road&track article posted on Dean Albrech's site:

" The front axle crossmember and myriad underhood compartments are also modified to accept the big V-8, which weighs 70 lb. more than the 300's 6-cylinder. The heavy-duty battery is moved to the trunk, mostly for balance, which reaches an ideal 50/50 ratio with two people and 175 lb. of luggage aboard.
Because of the additional weight and because the 500E is designed for performance, it has sturdier and shorter springs and plastic buffers, and gas-pressurized shock absorbers with auxiliary internal damping springs fitted to suspension that includes modified MacPherson struts up front and Mercedes' distinctive 5-link setup at the rear. Wishbones and steering linkage, taken from the 500SL, have been reinforced to accommodate the increased weight - 265 lb. to the front and 254 lb. to the rear of the car."

Go to his site and also check out the article on the AMG Hammer. Similar but not as extreme modifications were done to the Hammer too.

I don't think the E400/E420 went through the same mods. Maybe it has some but maybe not as many mods. Your right it would be a good project if it could be done.

The E500's front fenders are wider and the rear 1/4 panels are wider but the 4 doors are all exactly the same.. also the front bumper is different.. the e500's front lights are also different too..the regular e420's lights have a fog light on the head lights..but the e500's is on the bumper..also where the e420's fog lights are...the e500's is the high beem..and its chrom not silver like the rest of the w124's....the interior is basickle the same besides the rear seat devider like the w124 coups... and the steering wheel is the same as an sl500...and also it has the ASR botton..the rear bumper is also different; it gets wider as it get closer to the 1/4 panels.. the side skirts are also different; they also get wider for the fenders and 1/4 panels...the e500 also has a sun shade in the rear window...these are some of the thing i could say off the top of my head for now..

Extreme E500-

I respectfully disagree on the rear doors- look down from above at both cars and you'll see that the rear doors pick up the rear flare about midway fore-to-aft. And if you like, check the P/Ns (as I have)...500E/E500 rear doors are assuredly 124.036-specific, unlike the front doors.

One small distinction, if we're getting into details, is that the 500E front seats are set 2 or so inches farther apart, to accomodate the wider tranny tunnel. Not so the rears; they're identical to a 4-door Sportline setup.

And is the steering wheel the same as an SL500? It's 390mm in diameter, and I thought was a 500E and Sportline-only item

An other difference would be what is glued to the left side of the truck lid.... (500E vs 320E)
Insurance premiums would also be different.

I pay almost the same for my 500E as I do for my 300D or 300TE (all are within $100/yr). Reason is, a limited number of insurance companies remove the "HP", or High Performance, rating if the vehicle has 4 doors. So I pay a bit more simply because it's a more expensive car.

Learned this 2 years ago, shopped carriers and saved $1k/year
