A few pics of my 1988 560 SEC AMG, EURO. One with me in it, at L.Hansen's forewarding, in Montreal, Quebec on the day I picked it up, and a few days later at my summer home in the back woods of Colchester, Ct.. Please excuse the neighbor's dump, oops! I mean Home, in the back drop of one shot. Wish, I'd never pulled the shrubs out from my property line..

After ten long months of waiting, and working hard to get it into the country...Whew, glad all of that's overwith..

Nick,

I was never among the crowd who doubted you had this car. A quick look confirms it's a real period correct euro AMG coupe. AMG dashboard dials, AMG bodykit, euro headlights and headlight wipers, and AMG trunk badge. The wheels look like AMG originals, and the lowered profile looks just "right". The AMG factory really had its act together when it thought out the modifications for the car. The color looks like champagne.

It's the real deal, all right, and I am glad you made it home with the car. I just hope you can somehow get it legalized. If you have dealer plates, you should be able to run the car legally on the US streets if you slap then on, at least till you get it legalized.

Again, I would suggest you think about your Yenko Nova before you start modding this one up. It's best enjoyed as is, and not beat on. I think it is a treasure and should be treated as such.

Don't widebody it. Don't put in a roll cage and take it on the track. These weren't designed to autocross, even though they could, and indeed, in 1989, AMG raced them at Spa in Europe, and they did quite respectably. Maybe you could fix up a W123 CE coupe to do that.

These cars are more like true GT cruisers, in that they are designed to handle long distance cruising at high speeds. In the true Gran Turismo Homologato idiom....

You did pay a lot for the car, but consider that it is virtually brand new, and not very many 2nd generation coupes (1986-1991) were brought into the USA, whereas many of the 1982-1991 models did make it in, because the dollar/DM rate made it worth it to import them.

It would be intriguing for the W126 AMG fans around here if you took some pictures of the AMG paperwork, and listed what modifications were made by AMG. Does it have AMG shocks, suspension, steering wheel, and wood accents? Is it built on the ECE motor? Does it have a Gleason=Torsen LTD slip diff? Fire extinguisher? Trunk warning triangle? What does that strange script on the fender say (I have never seen one...)

What is the VIN#?

Thank you for the pictures, can we see some more of them?

Autocrossing it won't hurt it.

I ran about seven or eight last year with my sec and broke nothing. I wore out a set of hoosiers though!

Sure here's more pics to start. Thanksyou very much for the compliments, and advise also. The car has all of the original AMG suspension components, as it was outfitted by them when brand new. It has the Tri-Y headers, and dual exhaust system, and the possi rear end also. There's not a spec of rust, anywhere on this thing either, I mean nothing, not anywhere, and the body is in a champaign/light Beige color. Nothing on her has been changed. The trunk triangle is present, as well as the fire extinguisher, spare tire, jack, and tool kit. With the original first aid kit being present also. The wheels, are the original 3 piece ones, and I also recieved another set of 4 the same, brand new in the boxes, of two 17X8, and two 17X10, of the same wheels with the car. I also recieved a brand new set, of four Aero I, AMG wheels, still in the boxes with the car, as an added bonus. The car rides like a Camaro, but is glued to the road. The speedo, tops out at 300kmh, and everything is metric, including the digital, outside temp gauge, which reads in Celsius, not Farenheight. I have sort of legalized the car already. It so far has worked. I got pulled over the other night, and the cops did not know the difference. I have the vin tags, license plates, and registration, off of one of my 79 300CD's on the car. It is almost fool proof, for the time atleast. I will not be able to register the car as itself, unless I either go through a real import agency, and ruin the car with US modifications/restrictions, which I refuse to do, even if only temporary. I have an identity from another 88 560 SEC N/A for the car which will be set-up soon.

The car is almost literally glued to the road at even the highest speeds. I'm not sure what ECE means..? The car has the 6.0 Litre in it though, and is fuel injected. It gets a surprising 20 miles to the gallon which I suppose, means it is running very well. It does seem to be running a bit rich, and must be set-up for a different altitude or something though. It is loud, and mean. I drove it for the first time tonight in the rain. The thing breaks lose, very easily on dry pavement, and was very sensitive, on the wet asphalt tonight. I was actually embarrassed on my date because I think she thought I was spinning the tyres to show off or something, but it was doing it on it's own...HHMM. I explained to her, that it was my first time driving it in the rain, and I'm pretty sure she bought it. For some reason, I do not feel comfortable posting the VIN#. I suppose I can P.M. it to you or something, but I feel the VIN# of a car, is sorta like a social security number, and should probably not be given out freely. I'll get it to you though, just allow me to think on it for a little while though. Here's more pics, for now though. Some are nice, others not so nicely focused or very well lit. You'll appreciate them I'm sure. Enjoy

P.S. The badges on the side fenders say "AMG Engineering" on them..

Nick

560SEC clone vs. your authentic car. (pictures)

Hello Nick,

Thank you VERY much for the detailed response and reply and those pictures too. Never mind about the skeptics, about the car, you have provben them wrong, and frankly there are a few people who can get downright ugly around here sometimes. Jealousy? Brains of a flatfish?
Who knows? Never mind about it.

As to the car again, they are quite light in the rear end, and I too, remember
the first time I floored mine going up a wet hill in San Francisco, the car completely washed out, and I almost went totally sideways in the rain. It's a weak point with these things.

20 mpg is brilliant for a car like this. I never topped 18 mpg with mine,
and it isn't even a 6.0L. They demand premium gas, (Chevron with techron is the best) and if you give it to them, you won't have to worry about the injectors. The high idle can be a problem with these, but they should be at about 600-700 rpm when you are at idle.....

Your car is unquestionably authentic, and original, and while I won't ask what it cost you, being a 2nd generation AMG euro ECE, it is absolutely the best one to have even BEFORE AMG got hold of it. The ECE engine was the highest performing factory 560 motor made for Germany, it came out of the factory without cats, and gave 300 hp.

Since yours has the 6.0L DOHC 4 valve, that was the highest performing AMG engine they made (there were four choices and this was the top one). Whoever bought this car and took it to AMG wanted the best of the best.
Since it is a 1988, it is last generation car, with upgraded interior and exterior, and more desirable than the early 1982-1985 ones.

AMG claimed the 6.0 liter 4V at 365 hp, which was their hottest setup, and real fast for a car like this back in the day. You could dyno it to see exactly what it gives you....

Basically what you have is like having the Yenko equivalent of a 560SEC!!!
Very rare, very fast, very covetable.

It is believed that no more than 200 6.0L AMG engines were made (they were bored out 560 blocks).

Since the gray market collapsed in the USA in 1986, due in part because of the exchange rate ($ to Deutschmark) and Mercedes introducing the 560 engine, in part to combat the sales loss from Americans demanding power and putting AMG conversions into the 500 engine) your car is VERY rare; there are not many authentic 560SEC AMG cars at all, since each would be a 1986 or up.

There are some, but many are fakes and clones.

For perspective, depending on what AMG modifications were ordered, back in the day the 560SEC and 560SEL AMG packages typically cost from $20,000 $100,000 or more over the price of the new car itself.

Also, many owners today are wanting to create clones of these cars for themselves, so AMG body kits, steering wheels, dash guages, Monoblocks, Penta wheels, badges, tri-Y headers, fire extinguishers, and the like are VERY hard if not impossible to find, at ANY price, and they are very, very, expensive. And, you have all that stuff, already. Consider, people are really fighting and trying to buy those parts individually, and can't get them.

Your car has only the wall to wall tailight aftermarket option, that did NOT come from AMG. It was a readily available aftermarket modification. Few people bought them.

I don't blame you if you don't want to reveal the serial number now. No worries, here is the free Russian website you can run the VIN# in get a list of the original configuration of the car and what options it had:

http://www.mbclub.ru/mb/vin/?lng=eng

People would be interested here if you could share what came out.....

The bad news is that AMG in the 1980s was just a tuning firm, and had stores in USA, Canada, Europe, England and elsewhere. However, each one operated on its own, and no records exist before 1990, unfortunately.

It was bought out and absorbed into Mercedes Benz in the early 1990s, and the C36 AMG is the first Mercedes built "AMG" that came out of the Mercedes factory, as a W202 model.

Amazingly, there is a car up for sale advertised as a 560 SEC AMG, a 1990 model. It is even plated from the same Canadian province yours came on, and looks very much like yours, even to the window tints, wall to wall taillights, exhaust tips and wheels. However, look carefully on the trunk, the AMG script is wrong, it is the new ///AMG script not the A M G letters like yours , which are correct. Look also, carefully atthe gauges on the dash.
It has the NEW "///AMG" and NOT the "A M G" marking on the dashboard
like yours surely does.

It is a euro, and the German writing on the cruise control stalk that you can see in the picture, below, proves it. Cars destined for the USA had that writing in English on them.

The car is nice, but it is a just an AMG CLONE! It looks good but he is not saying it is a clone, and I am not a detective but I can recognize a clone when I see one.

The pictures don't lie. What is the difference between a cloned Yenko and a genuine Yenko? It's being falsely represented as something it is not, to raise the price.

The car was insured for $35,000 and he is asking $25,000 for it. BUT it had 59,000 miles on it (95,000 kms) NOT 4,500 kms like yours, either.

I would like to see a close up of the "AMG ENGINEERING" badge on your car. I have never heard of these, or seen one before...If you have pictures of the AMG paperwork, it would be neat to see that too. Especilly it would be interesting to learn which AMG dealer worked on your car.

Thank you for sharing the story and the pictures. It is always interesting to learn more about these great cars. The more we learn, the better!

Hope it went very very well with the girl, also.

Here are a couple of pictures of the clone:
