Can this be replaced without complete removal of the alternator? Looked like there was pretty good access.. I did try the SEARCH function but really didn't see anything conclusive.

I changed my 500sec without removing anything else. I used a wrench from my 80's craftsman ignition set. Don't remember what size but it is small.

Yep, with a short 1/4" socket set you should be able to reach the small bolts on the back of the regulator. I was able to on my 90 420sel
Just disconnect the battery first. And clean the regulator contacts while your in there with a small ss or brass brush.

Not sure about the V-8's. On the inline five it can be done with the alternator in place but I found it easier to just go ahead and pull it.

Typically there are either two 7mm screws or two Phillips screws mounting the voltage regulator.

The question is corrosion, access and skill level.

If the screws have serious corrosion they can break, forcing alternator removal.

Even if you have access and the required skill level, it is often easier to remove the alternator.

I prefer to remove the alternator for:
* Ease of repair.
* Inspection.
* Cleaning.
* Generic part store testing after installing a regulator to verify function.
