My 1987 260E starts within the first half-rotation of the engine - but immediately stalls. Re starting takes about 3-4 seconds of starter.

I have a Porsche 928 that had the same problem and found it to be the little one-way valve/bolt/thing at the fuel pump allowing fuel pressure leak-back to the tank. This caused a several-second delay to re-pressurize while starting.

Could this be the same problem on this car? If so, where is the fuel pump and who carries the part? If not, does anyone have suggestions?

Wow. Finally I come across someone else with the same problem I have. My 89 190E 2.0 does the same thing. I have two options; let go of the key, and the car will immediately die, or I can just hold the key through the temporary "start" and let it continue cranking (~4sec until the car actually starts). I have the problem only when the engine is warm. When completely cold, like in the morning, it starts on the first revolution and _stays_ started. Much like Steve, I am suspecting vapor lock because of lost fuel pressure. But before I go ahead and yank the fuel system apart, I'd love to hear if anyone else has had the same problem and successfully fixed it. Steve, if you find the solution, please let me know.

The problem can be solved by a really good tech. What is wrong is probably the static height of the air plate is too high. The value that is accepted is 2mm of free movement and no more. The trick is to find a tech that can adjust it without going too far and having to remove the whole assy. The coolest thing is that the whole repair takes about 20 min.
