I have a 91 300e 4matic, and it's leaking hydraulic fluid from the system, its a fairly slow leak, but is now starting to leave marks on my drive.

When I've looked underneath, there is not an identifiable location for the leak, and not having cleaned the transfercase yet,i haven't pinpointed it. I'm wondering if you have any experience with respect to common places of gasket failure. My local Mercedes mechanic said that new gaskets probably won't solve the problem as they all leak.

What experience do you have with them?

Thanks in advance

Which fluid is leaking? Is it trans fluid or brake fluid or hydraulic oil out of the self leveling suspension? All of them are hydraulic fluids.

The seals for the transfer case portion that contains the hydraulic fluid (clutch piston application fluid) is not serviceable. The transfer case also contains ATF for the clutch friction discs. The two different fluids should never mix together. If the hydraulic fluid fills the chamber that is intended for ATF only, it can start to leak due to an overfilled condition. This is usually indicated by a very low hydraulic fluid reservoir with no signs of a large leak. This condition requires the replacement of the transfer case. Hope this helps as your description is not very specific.

The Hydraulic fluid is leaking from the 4matic system. I've been monitoring levels, and the autobox is fine. While the reservoir is loosing fluid, I beleive that there is fairly significant evidence of a leak.

Do these symptoms still indicate a need for a transfercase replacement?

the systems functions properly, other than the leak.

Thanks in Advance

Russ
