Question 260E problem

Allright, here's one for the experts :

The washer fluid doesnt spray so I've checked the washer pump. checks out OK. Next I checked all the relays, the silver ones behind the fuses in the fuse box. They're all operational.
Question is which relay pertains to the washer fluid pump ? More over is there a way to find out if the inside switch for the washer spray is bad ? the wipers, headlights, blinkers all work.

Thanks.

Not an expert, but check out what M.B.DOC had to say earlier today in this thread:

300SE issues..

He references a 126 car; however, the car in question has a 103 motor as does yours. I wonder if perhaps the part number Doc mentions crosses over to your 124 car?

Just a thought.

Thanks Mike,
I checked out that post. But in my case everything 'but' the washer pump is operative.
I'd just like someone to confirm the part number and the relay that I should replace/check. If that doesnt solve the problem then the only thing left would be the switch inside. Which seems quite a hassle since the steering would have to come off....

You stated that the washer pump was OK .... does that mean it works and will pump water?

Sometimes years of sediment will collect at the bottom of the w. washer tank and allow itself to get clogged in the washer jets. Sometimes all that is needed is to use a small needle and clean out the washer jets on top of the hood. Try this and see if it helps ...

The pump is ok and does pump water. It's just not being triggered from the switch inside the car. The connection to the pump doesnt have any power triggered by the switch inside.
I connected it to +12v manually and everything worked fine.

I agree from what you have posted, it sounds like the column switch. I have never removed or taken one apart.

If it were my car I would put a test light at the pump connectors and confirm that when I use the washer stalk switch it doesn't work. From there, I would try tracing the wiring back from the pump to the switch.

Have you tried doing a search on this site regarding this problem?

Cool done !

Allright . Found the Problem !
Had to take apart the lower part of the driver side panel. Starting going through the wiring harness from the switch all the way to the fuse box. and at one point the wire was actually torn apart. Apparently it was rubbing off one of the plastic parts which tore it. Otherwise it would've been shot.

Before I did that I actually tried to replace the combination relay as well. FYI. the original relay 201-821-00 -47with the digits 00 in it used to be $80. It is no longer manufactured and has been replaced by an updated relay that has the digits 201-821-02-47 in there. that one's $150. Isnt that ridiculous ? All it has is three relays in it . why the price hike ? Anyways I was fortunate because I could swap it from a 190E just to check. the relays were initially the same.

For the 190E the relay has been updated for that car as well and has the digits 201-821-01-47 in there.
However I was told by the dealership that intially both cars had the same relays. For some reason now they've decided to change.

If your dont get any water on the windscreen but the wipers still operate using the spray switch, then the relay need not be looked at since that is operative. The pump should be checked and the wires from the point of split (grey to yellow) all the way to the pump.

Thanks again for everyone's help. !
I'm sure the Shop would've charged me atleast 3 hours of diagnostics charges had I gone to the techs to get this troubleshot
