Sorry for the stupid question, but tonight was my first oil change on my 300CE. My quesiton is,are you supposed to insert the oil filter into the housing and the screw the cap on, or push the filter into the cap and then screw everything down into the filter.

I noticed the filter comes out with the cap (which was kind of strange), so I was wondering if the new one should go back in with it???

Its already installed, and nothing went BOOM, so maybe it doesn't matter!

I have the same engine and I do all servicing myself.I put the oil filter into the can then screw it back on,done it this way a million times and it is ok.

SNAP it in the COVER . . .

Be careful installing too because the oil filter cartridges I've been getting from the dealer have a blank cap on one end where before they were open on both ends. Leave the open end facing down so the oil can get into it. I snap mine into the cap first and then place into the engine.

i found that the new ones can' be installed the wrong way because the cap on one end will prevent the filter from seating properly and you won't even be able to screw the cover back in...

I have change oil in a 97 E320 twice. The first time I removed the filter cap and the cartridge stayed in the engine. I replaced the old cartridge with the new one and then screwed the cover on. I did not even think of snapping the cartridge into the cover because the cartridge did not come off with the cover. The second time same thing. I was concerned that I got the cartridge centered in the housing. I checked for leaks and everthing is fine.

So, on an E320 the cartridge should be snaped into the cover and then the cover and cartride "assembly" is screwed into the engine, correct? I assumed that my E320 engine was similar to oil change DIY article on this web site.

Here is what Alldatadiy says about it (for my S320 with an M104). I assume that these procedures originate from Manfuacturer recommendations.

Changing Oil

• Warm engine up to operating temperature.
• On Model 140, remove air cleaner.
• Unscrew screw cover (2) with wrench socket insert (05) 103 589 02 09 00, or equivalent, so that engine oil in oil filter flows off into pan.
• Remove screw cover (2) and oil filter element (4).
• Extract engine oil through dipstick guide tube (5a) when engine at operating temperature.
• Drain engine oil out of pan if no extraction device available.
• Remove bottom engine compartment panel for this operation.
• Unscrew oil drain plug (arrow).
• Replace seal on oil drain plug (arrow).
• Screw on oil drain plug (arrow) and tighten to 25 Nm .
• Replace seal (3) in screw cover (2).
• Insert new oil filter element (4) into oil filter.
• Install screw cover (2) and tighten to 25 Nm .
• Open cap (19) and pour in 7.0 liters of engine oil.
• Run engine and check for leaks
• Check oil level at dipstick (5) approximately 2 minutes after switching off warm engine.

i too subscribe to aldata and although i know how to change my oil i went to aldata to find your directions since i didn't know they existed on that site.how did you find them?as i said i know how to do my oil but i'm wondering how much else i've missed on that site.i don't find it that easy to navigate but maybe you could give me some pointers and i could make better use of aldata.thanks

Once you're signed into AllDataDiy, under "Engine", select "Oil filter", then "Service and Repair".

You're right - it is often not that intuitive. I've found a lot of the more useful stuff by using the Search feature. Usually I do the search on whatever part the task is related to. Sometimes I draw a complete blank, other times I get great info - it is hit-and-miss.

What kind of car do you have registered? The content is different for different cars, and although our engines are same, they may have missed the content...
