Thought I'd throw up some photos of the parts:

Thios one shows an exploded view of the dismantled pump. From leftt to right are:

3 Pulley Bolts

Pulley

Shaft with pulley mounting plate

Above the shaft are the deteriorated buffer seal, replacement Vickers seal (too small) and that tiny ring that locks the shaft into the front part of pump.

4 Pump bolts

Front part of pump

Impeller with 10 vanes. 4 vanes are in, the rest are out.

Impeller housing. The black line is an O-ring. (FYI: The pump's O-rings were in new condition. )

Back of pump.

(The silver disc in the lower right is a neodymium magnet. I attached the impeller shaft's locking ring to it to prevent loss.)

Eric (or anyone else, for that matter), how did you manage to get the retaining ring off the pump shaft? (???) I'm in the middle of re-sealing my Vickers pump, and I've tried several different screwdrivers (and picks, and other assorted devices) and cannot seem to get the leverage to persuade it out of the groove. If you have any special tool recommendations, I'd be very interested to hear about them...

Thanks,
Anthony

Very carefully

It is a tough ring and will not break, however it is loaded like a spring and, when released, will forecefully fly away. If you should lose it, you are really screwed, so be careful.

I used a small, thin, flat screwdriver and a thin, strong pointed metal pick or probe. The pointed pick was held against one end of the ring to keep it from moving, and used the edge of the screwdriver to carefully, yet somewhat forcefully, pry the other end of the ring up and away from the groove.

Once you pry one end up, and it is resting on the side of the shaft, stop. Get a sheet or blanket, cover yourself and the pump, then continue prying it off. When it does release itself, it will not fly outside of the little tent you made, and you won't have to go on a long, frustrating hunt for it -- as I had to do with mine.

Also, it would be a good idea to wear safety glasses.

Thanks Eric, I'll give it another shot and let you know how it goes. My garage has a lot of junk in it, so hopefully I can get the darn thing out without it going airborne on me, otherwise I think I will be in for a looooong weekend...

Well how about that, I managed to get it out. Took a small pick, wedged it to keep the ring from turning, and used a long handled screwdriver twisted againsted the pick to pry the ring off. After that, the rest of it went pretty smoothly. Hopefully all this work will have affected SOME of the petroleum products leaking out of the engine.

Thanks,
Anthony

PS Pump Additional Suggestions

Thanks Eric for the information and check list. Everything worked wonderfully and I especially like the suggestion to reverse the through bolt (lower bolt on the tensioner Y bracket). I replaced my tensioner last week and torqueing that bolt was a pain.

A couple of observations.

Once you have removed the pump from the car, loosen and remove the four bolts which hold the sections of the pump together, but DO NOT separate the two pieces. First holding the pump by the reservoir with the impeller vertical and pulley mounting plate on a work surface, rotate the impeller slowly two revolutions. Then holding the pulley mounting plate firm, lift the reservoir section off. In this way the vanes are retracted into the impleller slots and they will not fall out. You then can maintain the orientation of the vanes and in fact put them back in the same slots if you like.

The Vickers pumps have only 2 bolts in the back for mounting onto the engine.

When you reattach the hoses, definitely use teflon tap on the threads.

Finally a question, does anyone know the torque on the 4 bolts which hold the pump together.

Thanks.

That was a very good write up on fixing your PS pump. I don't have to do this right now. I'm rebuilding my front suspension and I'll be replacing the steering gear as well.

Fairfax and Brooklyn?

Carlisle,

Glad I could help. It was a pretty straightforward repair, once the pump was out of the car.

WBain,

Yes -- I bounce back and forth. Odd combination of cities, but I am all Brooklynite.

Describe the trouble.

The pulley only needs to be unbolted. What back cover are you referring to? (The pump, itself, is also just bolted together.)

i've removed the ring but the cover seems to be stuck in; u sure i don't need a pulley remover for the pulley? i must have a different pump, b/c mine is solid; no bolts or anything that i can readily see

By ring, do you mean the small ring on the impeller shaft?
