Very Noisy W124 AC, when off!
Good Evening,
My AC unit has become very noisy when off. When the AC is on it is quiet and perfect sounding. When off a high pitched laborious squealing noise. Clearly identified sitting in car with motor running and windows open and changing AC on and off by switching from “0” to the “Normal” position. Car is '86 300E. 162k miles. What do I do? Is the pulley/clutching system replaceable? How hard is it? Thanks, David

Help! Still no replies! I have ordered the part. I got a rebuilt from the dealer for $108. How hard is this to install? I realize this is a basic question, but how to I losen the belt on this car?

david,
You have to loosen (not remove) the bolt just under the water pump, which belongs to the belt tensioner I believe its a 14mm and is kind of hard to spot. Then you can turn the adjuster bolt on top (gold looking tube bolt). Note the tension on the belt before loosening. This should allow you enough slack to remove the compressor. Good Luck...Someone else will chime in if I forgotten something.
