I'm changing my engine mounts. Can I jack up the engine "from the oil pan" to raise it just a few seconds so I could slip in the new mounts? Any other suggestions on how to raise the engine? Thanks! Francis |

francis,
If you pick up the engine by the oil pan, make sure you use a piece of two by twelve or something to distribute the load. If you don't do this, you may bend the pan. Francis, be careful, if you have a cast aluminum pan, you should not put too much pressure on it. It could crack, and you would end up with an expensive repair job. Book calls for lifting the engine from above. You may have to remove the tranny corssmember and raise the whole assy from below the bottom of the bell housing and tranny pan.

francis,
I sure hope my advice didn't cause you any grief. I have lifted a number of engines in the manner I described with no problems. I would've never thought that you couldn't lift this engine by the oil pan. I'm a rookie with these M-B. Why would you
need to change the motor mounts? What symptoms would the car have to make one thing the motor mounts needed to be changed. metalman 300e. |

Strong vibration when shutting off engine. Mounts have not been changed for more than 3 years - I hear that fluid type engine mounts have a +/- 3 year life. There is also a height requirement that the mounts should have. ------------------ 94' E280 Euro 85' 300D Euro 87' 250D Euro 77' 300D Euro Manila, Philippines |

First sympton was a strong vibration on idle P, then eventually vibration appeared on idle D. At high speed there is a low drone that sounds like tire/road noise but when your running a set of michelins you know it isn't. At regular acceleration and drive everything appears normal until you stop that is then vibration kicks in and out depending on how badly the mounts are worn.
Difference after fixing was like night and day. From what I can gather from a lot of people the original mounts seem to go around 60-70k miles give or take. Mine exhibited the above symptons at 68k. |
