The Olds Toronado was an AWESOME auto. It was one of the early front wheel drives, late 60's, early 70's if I remember correctly and a big block V8. I had a friend that had one and remember seeing 135+ on the speedo. I will say that the gas milage left a lot to be desired though.
good luck

If I recall, the Toronado was a 454CI V8 front wheel drive with very avante garde styling for the late 60s, and the engine/drive package was used in several motor homes as well.

My dad had Toronados all through my formative high school years the late 60's. They all had the optional 455 H.O. motor and a really cool speedo unit that scrolled the numbers. Needless to say the idea was to see how fast you could go without moving. Between eighty and ninety was a pretty good number without brake torqueing. The front tires never had a chance. When I would take it "scooping" (a weekend diversion for kids with cars) it was always a hit with the front wheels smoking until you couldn't see the car and then accellerating out of the cloud. This thread brings back fond memories.

The FWD/455 engine set up was used in 23' and 26' GMC motorhomes. They look alot like an airstream, except painted. The Toronado running gear would propel the motohome from 0-60mph in 22sec. Starting in '74 or '75 the engine size was reduced to a 403, adding an additional 4secs.
(o.k. so it is useless trivia )
I used to be a big fan of those early Toronado's...till a had a look at a '66 Riviera sporting a Wildcat 465ci motor...the whole car in black, inside and out...man, I still get a googly eyed when I think about that car.

When you think of Olds' most powerful autos, at least in the 60s, were the Toranado and the 442. Oldsmobile spare no expense when coming to power with these 2 cars. I think the 455 HO engine was standard with the Toronado. What made it unique was the front wheel drive, which is was rare then. I think the Caddy Eldorado was the only other one to have it (hey they ryhme).

It got real, real ugly in the mid 70s, like all other cars and became a POS. In its day, it was one mean machine.

Aaaah, yes,...the Eldorado, I completely forgot about the '73 my folks used to have.
Front wheel drive and 8.2 liters (500ci). I had a chance to drive it a few times...not too often though, with a 27 gal. gas tank, it would take a $20 and ask for more...much more. They sold it for a song..it only had 33k miles in '84, and it had just received 17 coats of laquer and a new vinyl top. Wich I would have had $3k back then.

Acutally Larry, that was not a 500 in3 engine, but a 501 !!! You were far off, he he. Just kidding. Before that GM made a 472 ci engine (like that wasn't enough).

Nevertheless, I heard that they used to use that engine in some airplanes ,would not doubt it. That engine was intimidating when you lifting the hood. That CADDY today with aribags would cost around $100,000 to manufacture, he he. My best friends mom had a 77 Eldorado and used to take us to school as kids (Smoke silver with black interior) Great airplane (I mean car).

The Toranado was meant for more hot rodding while the El Dorado was a Luxury Cruiser.
