My outside display of my 92 300SE still shows the digits but are very hard to see as the backlit area is now dark. Can anyone confirm that this is just a bulb replacement or is it the display module?
This is irratating as I just had the cluster unit out three weeks ago to repair the flashing warning lights problem!
Thanks anyone...

Try turn on the headlights and see if you can read temp readings. If not, it probably is the LCD module. Since you just have it repaired/changed, maybe there are some kind of warranty on it???

Sorry to hear that....

I would put my money on the bulb. The cluster on a 140 is very simple to remove for bulb replacement.I would try a bulb first.

To replace any burnt out bulbs back there, what is the best way to get to them??

I have a couple burnt-out myself, including the temp readout backlight.

Thanks,

Barry

On W140 & R129 cars with analog instrunent clusters, the outside temp display is lighted by a bulb soldered to circuit board. NO replacement parts from MB anymore, but its fairly easy to remove & solder new bulb.

Barry,
On a 140 chassis it is very easy to get the instrument cluster out by pushing on it from the rear. This is accomplished by removing the screen by the left door post and then taking out the two screws holding the left vent duct in place. Remove the duct and the two parts below it and put your hand in behind the cluster and push gently on it. By doing it this way eliminates the possibility of cracking the face using the hooks that MB has. Once loose, unplug the four electrical connectors and you're free. Also put the steering wheel into the lowest position, no reason to remove. I drove mine for a week without the cluster!! Ck. you gas level first though!!

What type of bulb?

I got the LCD unit out, and see the bulb that needs to be removed and a new one soldered in.

What type of bulb do I need to buy as far as Watts or mA...I don't want the new one to melt anything down the road...

Thanks.
