There exists such a model?
Today as I was waiting to cross the street to go to class, an elderly man with sunglasses was slowly driving by in a white diesel car that had a badge that said "240D_3.0" on one side and "automatic" on the other. The body style was the one before the w123.. which I believe is called the w114? This was a euro car as I am currently in Poland.
What strikes my interest is that I never heard of a 3.0 240D. I thought all 240D where 2.4L engines. |

I saw the same thing when I was traveling through europe several years ago and just chalked it up the the typical murky MB logic for naming the models, i.e. 280SE 4.5, 350SL 4.5. Sell a basic model and add another badge for the optional engine...

The 5-cylinder 3.0-liter diesel engine was not called 300D until it ended up in the W123 series. The reason was that the "300" designation was reserved for the owners of 300SEL's and 300SL Gullwings. The number 300 was still to valuable to be "diluted".

It was common MB practice back in the day to introuduce new engines toward the end of a model's run. It kept the old models 'new' and and the new models' newness was not diluted by the use of an 'old' name. Hence the 280SE 4.5 was introduced at the end of the 108's run and replaced by the 450SE with the same engine. And '450' certainly sounds more appealing than '280'. There were still exceptions, like the w114 250 with a 2.8L engine that was not badged 250 2.8. Or was it a 2.5L 280? MB is so confusing. Tom |

What about the 450SLC 5.0 vs 500SLC? The 450 5.0 was an 'early' 107 with a three-speed transmission, while the 500 had a four-speed and all the other upgrades that were bestowed upon the 107 in ~1981, correct? I've also heard that one's engine displacement was a few CCs above 5.0L, while the other was slightly below 5.0L for homologation compliance; is this accurate? Thanks, Tom |
