The fuel supply tube from the tank should go to a pre-filter (clear/white plastic inline), and then to the lift pump on the side of the IP. The fuel return line should go from the filter head to the hard line going back to the tank. You should put fuel hoses directly from the tank to the hard lines going to the engine bay (bypassing all the gas related equipment).
You will need to prime the system somehow (fill the filter with Diesel, use a mighty-vac with brake bleeder catch bottle to get fuel up to the lift pump).
