The only real difference nowadays is the oil that is shipped with the new compressors (and model numbers). They are shipped with oil for 134a, so you will need to drain and replace the oil if you are going to run R-12. However, there may be someone out there that has an NOS Sanden model with oil for R-12. From the Sanden website:
Due to low demand, Sanden has discontinued R-12 models. This includes the following R-12 compressor series (SD505, SD507, SD508, SD509, SD510, SD708, SD709, TR70, TRF90, and TRF105).
