Where to get injector lines?

I guess I spoke too soon about the 300SDL injector lines fitting okay with the 350 head. On my way to Manhattan, KS last Friday night I started smelling diesel and had really rough idle. Turns out when I got there and popped the hood one of the injector line fittings at the IP was spewing forth diesel. Took it apart Saturday and found the line had broken right at the inverted flare. Luckily, I happened to have a 3/16" brass compression fitting ferrule laying around that when put on the line and tightened down gave me a leak-free seal. So, I got the thing home to Stillwater, OK this morning with no leaks so far. But, obviously I want to replace the lines. I see they are not listed on any of the parts sites, so are they a dealer-only item? Also, am I correct in assuming I should get 350 lines instead of 300?

P.S. Also noticed the idiot indy also put green coolant back in after the head change. I guess I was planning a flush anyway after the head work, but still ticks me off. Stay away from Star Cars Unlimited in OKC!!!!

I know some shops (places that rebuild pumps etc) can make custom lines. Might be worth calling around to see if you can find anybody that can do that although this sounds like one of those things that might be cheaper from the dealer.

Answered my own question. Finally got a chance to call Phil and he can get them. MercedesShop rocks.

Green coolant is bad?

What's the issue with green coolant? Does it apply to OM617s as well?

Don't know if Green is bad, but stick to the MB coolant and be sure your doing the right thing, OM 617 too.

Guess what guy's, GREEN anti-freeze does no longer mean that it is ALUMINUM unfrendly!

Zerox makes the same stuff as the Mercedes PINK, but it is GREEEEN!!!!!!!!!!!

You should ask your INDY what he did put in! He may have used Zerox as it is a 1/3 ed cheaper than MB-PINK!

It is interesting to note that you got away with using a brass furrule, I would have thought that would have leaked!

I had Zerex G-05 in the car when I took the car in. It is clear in color. As far as I knew, the G-05 was the same stuff as the MB coolant. I have never used any of the other "flavors" of Zerex, so I can't comment on their color.

I too was really surprised the ferrule did the trick, it was sort of a last resort kind of deal since I really needed to drive the car back to Stillwater today. Even though I am replacing all the lines while I am at it, I think I will throw a 3/16" compression coupler and my spare tubing cutter in the toolbox in case by some stroke of terrible fortune I ever break (or rub through) an injector line out on the road.

The Zerex I bought at Auto-Zone two weeks ago, deos not list as G-05, but rather lists as "Heavy Duty" patented formula - antifreeze coolant - "for all metals, including aluminum" Part No: ZX001

Now I wonder? Are there two versions of the same product, one clear, the other green?

I priced a complete set of injector lines and WOW! they are expensive! Try about $33 each!

I'm sorry to be OT, but I've always used the cheap green stuff in other engines, all with aluminum heads, and some with all aluminum engines. I've never had a problem with corrosion, and I've run many many miles with it.

On the other hand, the OM617 engines I've worked on now all seem to have substantial corrosion on the water pump hose attachments, to the point where they leak. Maybe MB aluminum is different...

I think the issue with using the green instead of the gold (G-05) has more to do with the radiator than anything else. It makes the plastic brittle or something.

Yeah Sarafin, they are not cheap at all. Of course after 1000 for a head, 1100 for labor+valve job on new head, and 300 for injectors, another 200 for the lines doesn't seem so bad. It's only money, right?

As far as the coolant issue, I also have used the normal green stuff in everything in the past and only flushed and switched to the clear stuff since the Zerex G-05 wasn't that much more than regular and seemed to be the preferred coolant around here.

I wouldn't worry about your 617's iron head so much as I would with the later MB aluminum heads by using run of the mill (green) anti-freeze.

I have a 603 head sitting in my back yard with gapping corrosion pits that make this head usless.

MB makes note about this and mandates use of their balanced PH pink anti-freeze, balanced that is for safe contact with aluminum as standard anti-freeze PH levels are corrosive to aluminum.
