Benz turbo in a different car??? works??
I'm probably going out on a limb asking this, but here is goes. I am a lover of classic American cars too, and my favorite being the old Studebakers. I'm working on a 55 president right now, I've done a lot of research on getting more power out of the their V8. I'd like to put a single turbo-charger on it, and just happen to have a junk 82 turbo diesel laying around with a good rebuildable turbo. I think the two might go together well. If anyone isn't up to speed on Stude's, the motor is a 259 ci OHV V8. With a waste-gate opening pressure around 9 psi I think it would be great, knowing the later studes with the supercharger had around 5-7 psi. Let me know what you guys think!

Original block, heads, pistons, and rods?
If so, 9psi of boost will send your otherwise stock engine to the scrap heap. NOT maybe.

I'm gonna go and say that is not true at all. Studebaker V8's are known for their toughness, and boost can be as high around 10 psi w/o innercoolers, and no damage to any engine parts. the comp ratio is also low enough, atleast with the 259 so detonation isn't a factor. I was inquering if the garret turbo would stand up to the gasser's heat

The Garret turbo on your 3.0 liter diesel is not well matched for use on a 4.3 liter gasser. Heat at the turbo is not a big issue here.
Through the years I have turbo charged many engines. Rod and piston damage were common occurances on stock engines that were not "beefed up". Forged pistons and Carrillo rods stopped a lot of failures. Oil squirters on the piston bottoms and opened up oil galleries in the crankshaft also helps big time. I like to use Turbonetics turbo chargers. KKK are my second favorite. Look for a compressor map that matches your displacement for a starting point. Blowing a hot mix through a turbo isn't great either. I'm 100% FOR people experimenting and modifing their toys. Just be sure that you ask all the questions and get good information before you get a nasty surprise. If you think those old stock rods and pistons are strong enough to take a (roughly) 40% increase in power, go for it. http://www.turboneticsinc.com/ |

I figured that would probably happen, 4.3 liter is a bit much for that turbo, if I used two that might be a different story, but I wanted to stick with one. I have talked to a guy (Ted Harbit) who has raced with stude engines for years. If you ever saw these engines you would understand how tough they really are. For such same displacment, they weigh as much as a BB chevy, very thick walled cylinders, heavy crank & rods. I have no doubt it can take 10 pounds of boost. I might think about beefing it up if i was going to race it, but thats not the case. I better stop talking about Studebakers, and keep the benz's. By the way....ever do a B2 piston job??? a got an 82 that needs one, and could use some pointers, trans is already out of the car.

Piece of cake with trans out
Do a search on the diesel board here on B-2 piston. Lots of really good info on the MB transmission and proper adjustments.

Not too mention you might need sodium valves
