Where is the cold idle adjust,,,

on my 1985 300SD?

My 1976 240D used to have a know that adjusted the idle, turn it up when it's cold, turn it down when it's warm.

The reason I ask is that whenever I first start my car, and for the next several miles, I need to drive with two feet. Get's kinda hard when I'm making a right handed turn to prevent the car from stalling.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Marty

Hi Marty- I have a '76 300D which has the idle knob. However, I only need to leave it on high for less than a minute after starting, even on the coldest of days. When I turn it down while still cold, as long as it's been running for more than 30 seconds, the engine is rough, and idles very slowly, but it doesn't stall. If you are experiencing stalling after several miles of driving, it suggests to me that something is wrong.

I'm thinking that's only on the non-turbo models, '81 and prior. Turbos probably have some other way to adjust idle and/or cold idle. Others will chime in I'm sure.

Does it start shaking, about to fall dead when you stop at a red light? If so, try putting it in neutral while you sit at the red light, the idle will rise a little bit and it won't fall dead. Just remember to go back into drive when the light turns green.

Like ot know too

Mommies 84 actually has to be nursed for a minute or so after starting (on below freezing mornings) but then once it will idle on it's own it does fine. As it is warming up it will start to idle up to 1000 rpms sitting. You have to tap the throttle to bring it down after warmup.

My 81 kind of does this too although not up to 1000 rpms.

My new 85 wants to die for almost 5 minutes after startup. I have noticed though that the idle seems a little low since I killed it one day with the AC on, turning the wheel and backing up. Might have to just dial the idle up a bit and it will hold it's own better when cold.

I am not aware of any adjustment though although basd on how the 84 acts there must be something that brings it up a bit when cold.

mespe,

Last year for the idle knob was 1979. My '79 300SD has one, my '80 300SD doesn't.

I wish MB would have continued putting the idle knob on their cars. Its nice for charging the battery with the alternator or for more heat in the winter.

Guess you will have to learn "heel and toe" driving.

I used to have to drive my 300D two footed until it warmed up. I finally got around to adjusting the idle on the IP earelier this week and I no longer have to drive the two footed way anymore. There's a bolt down on the side of the IP on the engine block side. It has a spring loaded pin on the end which either can get stuck or is worn out. Either way mine was only a little stuck so I removed it and lubed the spring loaded pin with gear oil and reinstalled it and adjusted it so it would idle smoothly when cold. My car now runs like a dream and no longer dies just after starting it. I can just start and go on my way without waiting to warm up. This morning was quite cold and it started fine.

There is no cold idle adjust on the turbo models. I wish there was. As lietuviai said, there's a bolt on the engine side of the IP. It's a long bolt meant to be adjusted by a screw driver, but be sure to loosen the locknut first. I suggest adjusting it while warm and set the idle to about 800 rpm. There's another bolt on the back of the IP at the bottom, known as the governor idle pin or rack damper pin. This one also needs to be adjusted when warm and it should be turned out until the engine starts shaking and then back in just enough to stop the shaking.

yes, I agree. Mine was a little sticky too. I flushed it out with alcohol and then worked some anti-sieze compound in. Idles at the same speed regardless of temperature.

Diesel Addict,

Not true about turbo models not having the throttle knob. The '78 and '79 300SD, both turbos, have the throttle knob to increase engine idle speed.
