I can't believe that anyone would buy that car to drive; what a shame that would be. If you want a car to drive buy one with 80,000 miles on it. How could anyone take a museum piece and drive it as if it's a normal car?

Wonder if that is the original brake fluid?

In the photo of the engine compartment, they are clearly painted. Is that evidence of anything, or not?
On my W124 which has never ever been in an accident, the fender screws on the inside of the engine compartment are painted, just like on that 240D. I'm 99.99% sure that's how it's supposed to be.

wow

wow, i would love to have that car, but not for that much money.

i think one big reason a lot of people like these cars is that they are durable and you can really USE them, put the miles on and enjoy. if i had that car i would feel terrible driving it and putting miles on it. it's NOT for me.

what parts/items do people think would need maintenance, replacement on this 24 year old car? i mean, even in a time capsule some parts will age and rot.

stuff

tires, brake hydralics, belts ...not much else i would think. the rubber parts on 20+ year old benzes that have been used used and used are usually still good, so i would not look at wiring or much in the way of lelectrical problems. it surely has been inside all these years.

i dont see any reason not to use it. its a 240d forchrissake... not something any museum is likely to care about. if i didnt already have two that i like very much with rebuilt engines that i dont really need and i needed a car ... it would interest me at some price. hard to say what but the price is probably not that far off.

if i bought it i would just change belts fluids and tires and put it in service... unless brakes were stuck, if that then i would do what is necessary there and go.

My original comment was actually meant to say that is is a shame the car is one of the more common colors and had it been one of the rarer, more desireable colors it would be even more collectible.

I'll leave it to others to decide whether they think it is an ugly color or not, but it is clear someone is VERY defensive about their taste in colors.

I'll say.

I don't think the original comment was offensive, just a personal opinion. No need to defend it.

The Kemp Auto Museum has two 123s in its collection, along with a bunch of Gullwings and prewar supercharged exotica.

This car falls into a sort of gray area. On one hand, it is probably the lowest mileage (kilometerage?) privately-owned 240D on the planet. A true, 100% original car in showroom condition. IOW, a very significant specimen, no matter how humble the 240D may be.

On the other hand, it is just a 240D. Buy it, give it a major service, and for 20 grand, you've got your basic transportation needs met for the next 20-plus years. What a deal!

I vote to preserve this one. There are still plenty of old widows out there with low-mileage, original 123s wasting away in their garages; cars that will be cheaper to buy and serve the basic-transportation need just as well. But you'll be hard-pressed to find another as spotless and truly original as this one appears to be.

681 Manilla Beige is one of my favorites
