I would worry about the "original soft supple tires" and would hope for the buy it now price it would include a new set.

Was Uniroyals the OEM tire for this car in '79?

WOW, that is a beauty...........but is that milage accurate? I err towards serious pessimism with "time capsules" like this one....this vendor seems to have a high number of them....too many in my opinion.

Certainly looks like a pretty car, but what would you do with it? Drive it into town and park it between the SUVs? Or down the highway behind a truck hauling uncovered gravel? Unless you think you could actually make money by buying and storing it, I don't see the point. With 26 year old seals and hoses it WON'T be as trouble free as a new Toyota, obviously. I wouldn't be comfortable driving it, worrying about what might happen to it. Maybe Mr. Ebayhustler should sell it to a museum.

I would be afraid to drive down the street on a set of 'soft, supple' twentyseven year-old tires.

In 1976 my father bought a brand new Porsche 930 turbo. Silver with a black interior. It cost $26,000 and change out the door from Ogner Porsche/Ferrari. Two months later he broke his leg and couldn't push the clutch. Two months after that he was tee boned by a drunk driver in the family Oldsmobile. His health went downhill fast and he died in 1982. His intention was to put a SB 327 in it

It has under 1,600 miles on it. The AC still holds a little pressure in the lines. The P-7 Pirelli tires cracked and stopped holding air sometime in the 90's. It has always been parked under a cover in a garage. The covers last around ten years. I have a New Years duty to put in a few gallons of fuel and fire it up once a year. Then I drain the fuel until next year. The brake fliud gets replaced now and then and the windshield/headlight washer fliud remains drained.

This next summer I plan to replace the tires, give it a thourough inspection, and drive my 96 year old mother up to Yosemite in it.

The Market Has Spoken

Well, the highest bidder was $18,100.00. There'd be no shame in letting it go for that price. Regardless of miles, the simple fact remains that it's a late 70's W116 turbodiesel sedan. This cars historical and preservation value -- an appropriate valuation aspect given its condition -- didn't warrant the asking price. There's not that much rare metal and irreproducable quality parts to sum up to $37,800.00.

Again, personal opinion. It's all about who's willing to pay what at the point of sale.

I also opine that his cars are completely legitimate. I infer this because I believe people who buy top end collector cars know what they're looking at. And if they pay his prices, they'll hold him accountable for the product.

The market "spoke" some, but as outside observers of the auction, I don't think we can rightly say that we got to hear the "final word" from that market!

The seller ended the auction early - less than 24 hours into it - and the reserve price had not yet been met. That doesn't cause me to think it sold for $18,100. The seller could have pulled it for whatever reason - including the possibility that someone closed the deal outside of the auction for a much higher price (but still substantially less than his BIN price).

I don't claim to have inside knowledge here; I'm just pointing out one of several possible scenarios that I find credible.

Well put, and a point that seems to be lost on many people. If the buyer and the seller can agree upon it, that's the price - regardless of what anyone in the peanut gallery thinks!

it looks real

as noted above the model is not valuable enough to warrent a full restoration. i dont know about the mileage but it cant be very high by looking at the pristine condition of everything in it.

and since it is not collectable, if i want ed such a car i would just drive it. i wouldnt go on a trip with those old tires. they do look original. the deep rip on the side is what the tires that mb fitted looked like. i have had several cars with those in the spare well. my 500sec has one right now. i have put several on the road. in daily use the old tires tend to blow up a lump on the side after a few months.

great car. but it still has a frankenstein ac bracket and those terrible old chrysler ac controls.
