make sure you replace the little foam evap hose while your in there. it goes bad and will start to dump water in the car from condensation.

Just to clarify, the sickly sweet smell that has been mentioned here and often in other posts comes from ethylene glycol, the main ingredient in most of the current antifreeze. This is particularly noticeable when the engine and heater is hot, if there is a leak in the in-cabin heater coil. Would seem to be a better design to have put these coils on the other side of the firewall, but that has not been common since the late 50's early 60's.

Its a big job. Having done 2 W123 evaporator core replacements, so I know.
For the heater core leak I would have tried a radiator leak sealant first. But thats just my opinion.
While its out consider the following for replacement.

Evaporator If old and rusting, unless you like dash removals.
All vacuum elements pods.
The temp sensor tube at the top of the dash.
A new evaporator drain tube at the bottom of the evaporator box. I used a hard rubber garbage disposal drain tube.
All new light bulbs in the center console, dash and instrument cluster.
Test your temp sensor in the top center of the dash.
Test your evaporator temp sensor.
Expansion valve.
Shifter bushings in the shifter assembly.
Rebuild the instrument cluster if you want.
Check all rubber 2 and 3 connectors for the vacuum tubes.
Check all hard plastic tubes for cracks.
Check for oil in the ignition shutoff switch.
Check blower motor brushes.
