Autocrossing

Well tomorrow I'm going to be autocrossing my diesel with MBCA International Stars. Wish me luck guys, i'll be sure to have someone take some photos. I'm going to give my ALDA a few turns richer for my timed runs for a slight edge I guess. Hopefully I can take some award. (Hopefully not slowest )

Have fun. While I'd never do it with my curreny current MB, I do have plans for a "race only" 300D.

That is funny. Have you made any suspension or tire upgrades, or just going to do it stock?

Funny? Yes, I suppose it is. I ran against a 73 450SEL and a new S430. I ran some good laps considering the rain. On my 4th timed lap (out of 4) I spun it around sideways at the end of the slalom but I only lost about 2 seconds total. My entire suspension has been rebuilt / aligned and I have 4 newer Michelins on it. I kept it in "L" and really did well. I think the fastest time of the day was in the low 40s and my fastest was 49.6 seconds. The 450 may have beat me on one run by about 3/10 of a second. whunter took photos and I will have a video sent to me sometime this week.

They said I lifted my rear wheel a couple of times, its not horse power that wins in an autocross, but skill.

I maxed out my ALDA (2 complete turns) and it still didn't smoke much at all. I didn't feel much of a difference either.

Sounds fun. I hope to autocross mine next year in a local event just down the street. With some bigger rims (16's) it would handle a lot better. I don't doubt the back tire was off the ground, I've seen photos of other w123's with the same result. I look forward to photos.

Wow I want to try that! Your car would have had to be at quite an angle to lift a rear wheel, these cars have enormous suspension travel....

All I have been doing lately is about 475 miles of mostly freeway driving per week....at around 25mpg @ 80-85 mph!! Sweet! It just keeps on chuggin' very few repairs lately given the amount of driving/miles I put on it.

why didnt you drop it into S instead of L.. i thought S would give more speed off the line and throughout

hmmm.. interesting.. so if you work it right you can have like a manual transmission.. start in L move to S then lift it into D?

Exactly, except this was not a really high speed course and even lower with the rain so leaving in L was fine. I think the max I saw was around 3000 rpm in 2nd. Plus the engine braking effect really helped to negotiate the corners.

Hey! I autocross my diesel every so often! Attached is a pic from the Ohio Valley Region SCCA autocross a few weekends ago. Had the left rear wheel off the ground at the point that this pic was snapped. Hard to see though. One thing's for sure; my car did get the most "respect" for showing up. Countless photos were taken by people in disbelief

I'd love to learn how to drive like that. I get excited about driving around parking lots with a lot of islands in them ...

That's a valuable skill. Spinning out into a curb will not do fun things. I spun near the middle of the parking lot coming out a the slaloms so I didn't have anything to hit. Didn't even take out a cone.
