What drives the price of Diesel, seriously--last year it was cheaper than Gas..

Remember last year? Diesel was $2.75 a gallon? Gas was at $2.98? People were running out like crazy to buy Diesel cars...everyone was salivating at our Diesel's

Now I may be really wrong, but to me Diesel comes from the same stuff hat Gas does. I think something changes in the cracking process, but when they invented Google I saved my mind for remembering more important things like all the new phone #'s you have to learn when you move

So I am sure I could Google this. But I would like to get some Dieselhead input? What is driving the price of Diesel this year? I though the Home Heating Oil season, when it wound down, would drive the price down..

What seems to be the case is they are artificaly inflating the price by bidding on oil futures as Enron did to drive up electrical costs in California. If it wasn't for that diesel would be $1.70 per gallon.

Here are some things you can Google to research what's happening:

1) "Oil Company Profits"

2) "Dollar Devaluation"

3) "Rip-Off"

It turns out that for many people and businesses, their oil demand is not flexible. You can't easily reduce driving to work and shopping for food.

So to me it is becoming a matter of trying to see how much they can charge before demand drops - thus maximizing profits.

I have not seen diesel cost less than gasoline in over 5 years, at least not in the area or state I live in.

I just finished doing repairs that took me about 6 months. I filled up my tank at $4.51 per gallon. The last time I filled up, diesel was $3.60. Less than 6 months before that, it was under $3.00.

Seriously - a lack of U.S. refining capacity, increasing global petroleum demand, increasing US diesel fuel demand, a weakening dollar, and significant investment in oil futures is driving up the price of diesel fuel.

It is very difficult to build a new refinery in the US (which is badly needed). The existing infrastructure is 40+ years old and running at full capacity. We need congress to act to make it easier to build a refinery - may I suggest somewhere in MI, as we need the jobs badly here.

There is a perfect storm brewing, and I think we'll see good old 87 Octane moving to $4.00 within the next several months - God only knows where diesel prices will go. Strangely, it feels better to see regular fuel costing almost as much as diesel, as I'm less annoyed with the cost of filling the Benz's tank.

Expect diesel to be well over 4.50 everywhere in the next weeks. oil today is at $118. When crude spikes its usually a few days then diesel climbs, and never goes down regardless of crude

Our regulators must have found that looking out for us isn't as profitable as looking out for the big oil companies. The price of their personal integrity must be having a going out of buisness sale.

Price regulation would bring nothing but shortages, rationing and long lines at the pumps. Most of you are probably too young to remember what happened in the late 70's under Jimmy Carter when there were price controls imposed.

History has shown that the little guy always loses... No matter how much bull**** our politicians spew, no matter how many babies they kiss, and phony smiles they cast in our direction - the fact of the matter remains - the interests of wealthy organizations will always outweigh those of the common man. Its really a terrible shame - people hold out such high ideals - and then conduct themselves behind closed doors in a manner completely contrasting those ideals.
