Belt Noise
The belt on my 1997 E300D is noisy. It's not a belt slipping noise just a higher pitched chirpping type noise. The belt is new as is the tensioner shock. Warm or cold, A/C on or off, makes no difference. The belt feels like it is tensioned normally and all the pulleys appear to be turning in line just fine (no wobbling) ..... so what could it be?

What about the pulley??? My parents van did and every time they replaced the tensioner pulley (Assuming it's the same noise as you described)

Bearing noise?
Remove belt, start on cold engine and run for 30 secs and see if noise is present. If it is, it is internal to engine. If not present, turn off and spin each accesssory device by hand to find the offending belt driven device. Another test is to use a hunk of 2 x 4 and floor jack and lift the engine at the oil pan 1/4" (NO more) while idling. If belt noise goes away you have a bad motor mount.

The engine mounts are new .... about a month old. The belt and the pulleys look like they are running true at idle to me. I'll try removing the belt and running the engine to see if the noise is truely coming from one of the pulleys. It'll have to be next weekend until I can do it. I'll post what I find. Thanks for the suggestions.

I finally worked on this problem earlier today. I removed the belt and ran the engine ..... no noise ..... so the problem is with the belt and pulley system. With the belt off, I spun each pulley and they all appeared to be clean and they all turned true without any squeeking noise. I then replaced the Contitech belt with a Goodyear Gatorback belt. I have used Gatorback's on my Jeeps and they have worked well in that role. The Gatorback with its segmented ribs is susposeately designed to be quieter than standard belts. I put everything back together and it runs like a charm with no noise whatsoever. Perhaps the American Goodyear product is truely superior. Has anyone else had experience with Gatorbacks? Any thoughts on using Goodyear belts?

I had a similar situation with our Caravan - Gatorback belt cured squeaks. Also nice that the belt packaging sleeve has a belt routing diagram.

I love Gatorbacks. Conti's just don't hold up in my car. I get about 5 years on Gatorbacks. Even then, no cracks or separation. Just some dryness and stretch. Well worth the little extra cost.
