I'm pretty certain the russian vin site says mine has the 80l tank. Maybe your too? I've never run mine empty, but have put 20.5 gals in it before.

I suppose the part number, if it could be found, would tell the tale, but it would be nice if there were a clue such as the "intrudes back into the trunk" that Tim made earlier. Any specific giveaways for 124s or 210s or whatever?

Russain EPC shows a 65l & 70L tank. The former with the ski cutout in the center. Maybe they didnt get the bigger tank?

Ask NHDOC to note the number for you. He's going to be doing the rear shocks on his soon so will have the panel off and will be able to see the sticker.

Done.

Our owner's manual says we have a 16.4 gallon (65 liter) tank including a 2.1 gallon (8 liter) reserve. The problem with that is that we have put as much as 16 gallons in the tank and, although we were pretty close to "empty," we weren't that close and the warning light wasn't on. (I just checked, and it works.) So I suspect we may have a larger tank but there's nothing specific listed in the Datacard for our VIN. The Russian VIN site didn't have anything that mentioned fuel tank size. Maybe I'll ask the dealer, see if they have access to any more info.

Humm, I read a different thread recently where guys reported better mpg in cold weather. btw, I am paying $4.89 or $4.99 per gallon here in los angeles.

I believe that larger tank was only used on the '95 124 diesel, I'm not sure about the 500E/E500. I think GSXR has some information on the tank. I believe he told me it could be retrofitted to older 124s.

The EPC shows a 65 liter replaced by an 80 liter. It doesn't show a date or I can't find the date when the change took place.

According to the MB EPC the part number for the E300D tank was originally 124 470 00 04 - it is listed as a 90 liter tank.

The EPC also indicates that at some point the part number was changed to 124 470 95 01 and a quick cross check also shows that exact same part number listed as the tank for a 124.036 (500E) in USA trim.

So it seems like the 500E tank, if you could find one, would work for a 90 liter Diesel upgrade.

The dealer today confirmed that both 65 and 80 liter tanks were available for the 1996 E300D (W210) but could not determine which came in my car based on my VIN and their records. It's interesting that the owner's manual says it is a 16.4 gallon tank -- that is only 62 liters. I think the next thing is to run the car until the reserve light comes on and then go fill the tank, see what it will take. The Russian MB club's VIN lookup does not give fuel tank size for my car.

That's pretty decent fuel mileage.

Not bragging, but Im rounding 2,000 miles on a single diesel tank (and I still got half a tank left). I have a second WVO tank, though. This hot weather and some long trips are making for some really nice diesel mpg

I'd also like to have a larger tank in our '96 E300D but that is a W210 car, a different animal. It comes with a very small tank, only 16 or 17 gallons.

Sixto, "bladder late than never." To use a gasser tank you might have to solder in a return line; I don't know if gasoline fuel injection systems have return lines. Otherwise it might work.

Jeremy
I think that from reading somewhere that all w210's for the US market had the larger tank. We had no "ski hole" access through the back seat, hence the larger tank. It's possible that the pumped stopped due to the foaming of the fuel while filling, thinking it was full when it's really not.

I have in the past added in excess of 22 gallons on a really low tank. Topping off slowly ofcourse :-)
