woooo hoooo! Mileage report on new fiver in 300d euro with 307 rear

I took my first trip with the fiver in the 83 240/300 euro na car with the newly installed five speed.

I am running about 37 front and 35 rear cold air pressure in my new michelin water edge (is that right?) 195/70r14 tires.

I drove to oxford ohio and attended a porsche ralley with the #1 lovely daughter her hubby and the three gkids. (Good time), then I drove up to Colombus to their home and then back home. 442 miles 12.05 gallons. That works out to be 34.15 after reducing it by 5% for the odometer error.

I estimate about 2/3 was interstate driving 72-73 when alone and on level ground. I let her speed up when going down hill and slow going up and drove whenever convenient in somebody's wind shadow, sometimes getting up to 80 briefly, (never less than four car lengths I estimate). The other third was secondary roads driving 60 -65 and some stops. There was nearly an hour of idling in Oxford with the air running waiting for this or that.

I found my odo is 5% optomistic, by the mile markers and my speedo is pretty much right on the nose.

I bet on a trip with only running 65 I could get 36!

I would say the five speed transplant is performing as well or better than expected.

I am pondering some belly pan work and so forth in an effort to reach 40 mpg.

Tom W

Hmm. why is your odo off? that's the right rear gear for the oe speedo... are you sure it's not slipping?

Now, don't be a spoil sport!

I don't know why. It does not seem to be slipping. If it were slipping it would not be consistant about it would it?

Hmmmm I wonder if it might be a speedo for a 2.88 rear? But the speedo seems to be right on the money.

Its the most inaccurate odo I can remember in a benz. They are usually only one or two percent off.

Possibly tires. Mine is pretty much exactly 5% off at all speeds (shows 63 wne GPS shows 60).

I have also have stock size tires - 195/70/14s on it, and it is an unmolested 1 owner car (I'm the second owner).

So the only thing I can figure is that the Falken brand tires that are on it are slightly undersized for their rated size...

Well Tom this is pretty conclusive proof that meddling with gear ratios does have a real upside. I suspect with a turbo engine you might have even got a couple of miles more per gallon. For quite awhile a lot of members thought changes were not worth the effort milage wise.

I always felt I would be pleased enough with the noise reduction alone. The increased milage just a bonus. When your arm tires from shifting the five speed transmission I can help.

I had a 2.41 in my El Camino, naturally aspirated V8 diesel w/130HP

Was a slug off the line, but still fun to drive.

0.70:1 overdrive gave me something like 1,800RPM @ 75MPH

The millage was astounding, around 35MPG.

Tell me what happens if you slap 2.88's or lower in a 300D

Pretty impressive numbers. How many passengers were in your car?

Just me about 205# fully clothed, and an overnight bag and an extra 50# steel wheeled spare!

On the highway weight really has virtually no effect.

If I could just find a six speed tranny I could pull a slightly taller final ratio but a lower first would be essential.

A lower first would be a great improvement in this setup.

Nice results, that is promising. it is too bad those transmissions are not more readily available.

makes me wonder-what's the smallest brownie box made??

I disagree- when I roll fully loaded, it definitely cuts down on mpgs. I reckon 3-4 mpgs anyways- I'd have to look closer @ the mileage log.

Of course, when I load the wagon, she's pushing 5500-6K. and we have lots of rolling hills around here.

Congratulations Tom, no one will ever convince me the five speeds not worth it.
