Interesting. Not sure on the engine source, but Mercedes sounds likely.

The hoseable rear passenger compartment sounds cool to me! Hit the lawn and garden department at Lowe's with the wife, and we don't have to freak out when all those plants she loads in the car fall over and spill out dirt, and the bags of potting soil and fertilizer split...WOW!

Of course -- I may be showing my age again....

These guys have been talking all kinds stuff since 2006, and supposedly these cars will go back to carbon for recycling once their service life is over. Supposedly no cars will be sold to the public once they are retired.

I'm guessing its going to be BMW. 3.0L Inline Six with an optional Twin Turbo

According to one video I watched on their website the car will have a "supercharged diesel" engine.

I haven't ever heard of a supercharged diesel.

That is odd...it says the 0-60 time is 6.5 seconds @ 300 horse and 420 torque. The new E300 Bluetec has 200 horse and 400 torque and does 0-60 in 6.6 seconds....must be that the CMC has higher gears for a higher top speed.

I find that reporters know little of "blowers" and tend to confuse "supercharge" with "turbosupercharge" (which is the technically correct term for what we all call "turbocharge."

Actually both are poor descriptors of what it is. Supercharged and Turbocharged (Turboed?) are only used in the USA. The correct terms to avoid confusion are "Belt Compressed" and "Turbine Compressed" , hence the name in brit english of "Compressor" and in german "Kompressor".
Dumb reporters would probably be less confused if correct terms would be used instead of long-ago-passe-commercial-names.

I do agree that most journalists look like they don't know the difference.

It is entirely possible that it is Turbocharged and they are using the term Supercharged interchangeably.

Supercharged Diesel engines have be around at least since the late 1950s. The Military used to use a Diesel Generator set with Supercharged Cummins Engines (similar to the non-supercharged Engines that went in the Big Rig Trucks).

I saw the 1st one when I was 9 years old (1961) as I went with the Father of a friend who was a member of MARS (a HAM radio group). I went with him to a Government warehouse where the MARS members got to pick over the surplus electrical equipment. I the warehouse was one of the Supercharged Gen Sets. The Friends Father pointed out the Supercharger to me and explained how it worked.

Later in Trade School around 1975 they had several of the same Supercharged Engines donated by the Navy to the Trade School for the students to take apart and get running again.

Later when I worked as a Mechanic I rebuilt 2 of those Cummins Super Chargers which operate the same as the Detroit Diesel Blowers (Roots Blower).

All

of the Detroit Diesel 53, 61, 92, etc. series diesels were supercharged. Some were turbocharged in addition to the supercharger. I have a pair of Detroir 8V53s in my boat that have the supercharger (only).

They were 2-cycle engines that needed the supercharger to evacuate the exhaust gasses out of the cylinder before the next "pow!" Not bad power, but were considered a NA engine without the turbo.

Yes, they told us in trade school that they are NA engines (not considered supercharged). Most that I have seen since the early 80s have also been Turbo Charged.
