I'm thinking I can use something like a long-nut to mimic the original design with a washer and a flat rubber o-ring beneath it.

you could do that or. get a long screw with the same thread and screw the long nut onto the screw with locktight right up to the screw head, then you could put it in the housing, put on the rubber washer and the steel washer that is stock, then double nut that with locktight and it would be a pretty close approximation of stock.

I suspect that might work, too. I guess it all depends on what I find in those nifty little drawers full of hardware at the store. I love that isle.

UPDATE: They are fixed! I took them back out, took them apart, and found that the joints had come undone and the screws were a rusty mess. I popped the joints back together and took an old toothbrush and WD40 to the screws and all is good now! Lights are aligned and working great! Thanks all for the help, especially the great close-up pics!

Hooray!

It's sad that one of mine is still broken. Oh well, at least they match the rest of the car.

Really? The FRENCH ones do? My UK W123 lights needed new lenses for this reason, but the French W123 lights I brought back several years ago were plug & play. Is this common on French lights, or is there a possibility that yours might have UK lenses affixed? That seems odd that they'd skew the illumination left rather than right.

Check out post #12. I've got the French lights and they climb up the right side as they should.

As did mine... maybe KAdams is thinking of UK lights. I like the French lights, by the way, but when I sold mine, they were actually quite a bit HARDER to sell than the rectangular euros. I think I only wound up getting $100 or so for them, and they were in nice shape! Oh well.

Anyway, glad to hear you got yours fixed easily!

I was thinking of right-hand drive lamps for some reason. It was a brainfart moment.

No biggie -- I thought maybe I had overlooked something on mine and possibly pi$$ed off half the drivers in east central IL for the time I had them on my W123.

I put Euros on my 98 Jetta and they are fantastic. With the brand new lenses, it was night & day. Very clear that there is a distinct pattern to that beam.

Anyway, good luck with your repair, too! Don't US-Spec lights use the same (or a very similar) adjuster knob? I could swear my old W124 lights had a knob like that. Maybe there are subtle differences, though? I'll try to check, and if they are the same, you can have mine if I can get them out.

About those pesky DOT light adjusters... I really wouldn't know. On the '77, there are no adjusters left, just zip ties. It was a blast getting them aligned. I never bothered fixing them properly, because I always wanted to go the Euro route.

I suppose I could go look at the lights on the parts car. It seems to have had far fewer hill billy repairs in its life. I'll take a peek at it later today if I remember to pop the hood while I'm down at the shop switching out the winter tires on the wife's car.
